1987 IH s1600 value?

evening folks.some of you may remember my posts throughout the year of my 1987 IH s1600 that I had planned on using as my welding truck, but I have had a hard time convincing myself that it's worth paying 3-4k for an old used service body, when i can get a complete setup truck with crane, for a bit more.so since i am going to buy another truck,i am looking to sell the IH.my question is,what do you think a truck like this would go for?it has 137k miles,6.9 diesel,5 speed spicer,12ft stake body flat bed, completly gone through mechanically, frame looks like it just rolled out of the factory(original paint),complete new glow plug system, all around solid truck.i was planning on keeping it so it's in great shape, just needs a heater blower and radio, which i will take care of.any ideas are greatly appreciatted, thanks.

Location is everything. Probably about what Belgian said, though for that I can buy bigger old road tractors and strip an axle out if I want a smaller truck. Or use as is.

Like they said location is ever thing. Around here a truck that old is just very cheap or not going to sell. They said 6 to 5 thousand no way here in Tennessee. Think you would be holding it a long time with those kind of asking prices.

Your problem is the obsolete, non-turbo engine, and the manual transmission. Buyers aren't scared of an automatic in a truck that size anymore, so they want automatics. They also want air conditioning. It also needs to have a current, valid DOT inspection. In my area, a 33 year old truck with no turbo and a manual transmission would probably high bid at about $1500 at auction. I've seen larger IH dump trucks of that vintage with a DT466 sell for less than $2500. I know it's seems like a big truck to you, but it doesn't have the GVW of a modern truck that size. I would bet a 2000 Ford F450 with a 7.3 has almost the same GVW as your truck, they were available up to 16,000 GVW. In today's world, they would both cost about the same to operate in fuel, so buyers want as much GVW as they can afford. Trucks that size from the last 20 years also drive and ride much better. Just the way of the market now.

I did not want to tell him but the $ 1500 figure was what I was think also and I have been to auctions where it would not ever get a bid, like you said just not what folks want today.

Hey guys, thanks for all the input..i was kind of afraid that it's not worth much, but what type of crowde do you guys think would want this.i figure i will put an add in the lancaster farming paper, but to be honest if it's only worth $1500,i will probably keep as a spare truck.i guess i will advertise high and gradually lower it.thanks
