656 Hydro Dumb Question

When everything is adjusted and working properly, should a 656 hydro roll freely when the Forward/Reverse lever is in the neutral position? I mean in the center of the cross slot between forward and reverse. If i move it to either side without advancing it, it will hold in place without moving but in the center it rolls freely like a gear drive in neutral. Is that correct? Or should it hold in place like a hydrostatic skid steer would?

With the range lever in hi or low,it will hold in place . If the hi/low lever isin neutral,it will
roll just like a gear drive in neutral. The hydro trans is in front of the range trans. It will only
'work' if the rangetrans is in gear.

It will roll somewhat free with the hydro lever in the middle of the side to side slot but it's not really good of the hydro trans to do this. If it needs to be towed move the range lever to the neutral spot between high and low. I think everything is correct the way you describe it

OK let me tell you why I asked this question. I just replaced the two 1/4" lines from the spool valve to the transmission housing. They had rubbed together and a pin hole formed in one and I eventually lost all forward drive. I made new lines and replaced them both and now it seems to drive fine. I went up the steepest bank I dare climb and it didn't hesitate at all. However now when i place the forward/reverse lever in the neutral cross slot, the tractor rolls freely even on a slight incline. It never did this before. Range transmission is in low range.
In the process I did remove the fiberglass shroud that f/r lever goes through. What did I screw up to cause this? I looked through the repair manual and something in it led me to believe it should roll free in this position which really confused me. That's why I asked.
