And then it rained

The weather woes here in the Mid Atlantic go like this: it was blazing hot and dry for the last 3 weeks. T storms were sporadic and our place is in a dry area where the storms tend to track slightly south or north of us. No rain for 2 weeks. Plants getting very stressed. Then, over the weekend a couple of shots of rain. The 2nd cutting grass is ready to bale and not as crispy as it was. 3rd cutting alfalfa is now full bloom from the heat. Here comes this tropical storm, moving nice and slow. We will easily get 3-4” of rain. The humidity will be near 100% and it will take days for the ground to dry up. If only the timing of these storms wasn’t early August, more like mid July after 2nd beans go in and corn is filling out. It happens about every other year, maybe even more often. Hopefully won’t be the flash floods and damage as in years past. Then more unsettled weather on the way. Oh boy. Even more annoying is the constant amount of news alerts about how bad it ‘might’ get. That public service is dumbed down and directed at those few individuals who are completely oblivious to their surroundings and done at a complete saturation level. By the time it is all over, the hype is 2x worse than the actual event. And of course they NEVER remind anyone to clean out their gutters or storm drains beforehand of the heat dropped leaves and sticks, so the street flooding is worse than it could have been.

We've gone from bone dry most of July here in Central VA to muddy the last week or so and now from the the storm we're supposed to get 2 to 3 inches.I'm always thankful for the rain this time of year sure beats being dried up.This will be great for getting pastures growing again.

Looking at your weather map, and the pins on it, you are in the heart of the storm, so to speak. If you look north to the Great Lakes area , and in the north shore of Lake Ontario you can see another big rain storm happening. I am between Toronto and Kingston 50 miles north of the Lake Ontario shore, and boy we are getting some rain here too.

East Central Virginia we have had 7 inches and still raining and a lot more to come. No power also

On your comment about reporting, I noticed that too. Seems the current theme, including the weather stations getting into areas not really classed as forecasting/reporting, is to keep everybody scared to death so that they will act irrationally, or won't act...spend money, go to work. Expect a lot of this to disappear after the elections. Don't suppose there is a connection, now do you!

Agreed, and on that note I have noticed that tbe colors on radar have changed meaning. Green used to mean rain-now clouds, yellow used to mean heavy rain-now sprinkles, red used to mean head for cover-now heavier rain and tbey have added dark red and purples for tbe heavy stuff. And every thunderstorn is a severe weather event,,

We are extremely dry in my area. I have cut no second crop yet as it has not yet grown. The storm is going to the west of us and the prediction now is for .3 inches. It is looking like little to no second cut this year despite the urea that I put on back in June. The forecaster storm hype has been very hard on the hospitality industry here in the northeast. One winter twenty years ago I had customers have to close down for good after about eight predicted blizzards and all but one fizzled. People watch all the hype so they stay home.

Its rained here every week at least an inch each week mowing grass has been more like bailing hay...

The storm passed thur the night 2" of rain I see no wind damage. 1-3/4" came about 3 PM yesterday in a 20 min. event the total amount = 3-1/4" it moved thru fast...

Ah, the weather hype!

Not good enough to report the weather is cold. We have to have the hype of wind chill and "feels like" nonsense. Then when it is hot, just being hot and humid is not enough. Now we have to have a "misery index" added in along with the "feels like" exaggeration.

Long ago, the weather report was just that - a report. Forecasting was fairly accurate compared to today. If they said it was going to rain, it probably would rain. They did miss quite a bit, but we didn't have all of the drama.

These days, everything goes by ratings. Even the news and weather. That is the primary reason they have to keep stoking the fire so to speak. That is where all of the fake news and weather drama comes from.

If you want a real and fairly accurate forecast, go to the National Weather Service or your nearest commercial airport. Pilots of commercial aircraft are only interested in the truth about the weather. Not the hype.

A word about those "computer models" that they show on the TV weather reports. In my humble opinion, they are simply not ready for prime time. There are too many factors that have not yet been programmed into them. They seldom agree with each other, and seldom are accurate. They would be better left out of the forecast.

The news media just gives you what you want. Hype gets people’s attention and they continue to watch. So they give you more hype.

I get my storm forecast from NOAA. No hype and fairly accurate forecast.

But look at some of you. Fretting over a rain storm that is not even a hurricane. Wind speed is only 70 mph.
And you wonder why the media broadcast hype.

Hey John, people are always going to talk about the weather, LOL.

Rain not too bad in the north east corner of Pa. We only got 1 1/2 inches. But I had to make a trip down to Scranton and about 5 miles east on Rt. 6, and wow did they get a lot of rain and some high winds. I was glad to head back to the hills.

I just had a cell come over the house...was orange on the National Weather map and not in a big hurry to get over me....will know how much I got when I go out and feed the dog..bowl tells the tale.....but looking at the ground, barely damp. Yepper, scare mongering....sign of the times.
