Horses back out on pasture

For the past 2 months my horses have had to stay in the barn lot because the township and DNR have been repairing a big slip that has caused the road to slip. I've had to put them in the barn lot supposedly for 5 days but that as is often the case has turned into this long. They planted new grass in the pasture which is just now coming up and they are putting up new fence today so maybe I can get them back out there. My question is, since they have basically not been on pasture for this long, can they get grass founder? It's been terribly hot and dry for the past month or so and now for the past 3 days we have had rain so things are greening up. Anybody got any info on this . Keith

Green tinder new grass does test the limits of a horses'e ability to self regulate. My suggestion is to give them 2 or three hours, then look to see if they are still cropping the grass like a haybine. If so I would pull them off either to a less green cut hay field, or the pin until they digest what they are consuming. If the field is kinda sparse, though new green, I might give them a bit more time, but be watchful. Jim

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. I think I'll do as Jim said and just let them out on the pasture a couple hours a day for a few days and let them get used to it again. They have full access to newly baled round bale of hay all the time so the only problem will be getting them to leave the new grass. Usually I can get them to leave the pasture with a whistle from me, but they might not want to do that after being penned up for so long so it might be go get them with the 4 wheeler LOL. Probably let them out at about 2:00 P.M. that way they will be at the barn at 4:30 for their grain (they won't miss that for anything. Keith
