WD 45 engine locked

Good day everyone, my first post on the site. Here we go! The camp that I am maintenance director at purchased a '58 WD45 this spring. I have used this tractor for many duties and it has been great! the other day, however, I went to start it and pull the starter rod and it crank over as normal. It didn't start in the first few seconds, so i let off the starter and was going to apply the choke and try again. I pull the starter rod and this time it was just a click and not much of one. I tried again. The same. I am pretty handy with mechanical being trained in the automotive field and being a paid mechanic for over 25 years. I made numerous checks, pulled plugs, tried turning engine over with crank(nothing) then tried pulling it to see if it would break. Nothing, it just dragged the tires on the road. The engine appears to be locked tight and I have no idea why. It ran great the day before and was even free when I first tried to start it. Any Ideas out there? I am dumbfounded at this point. Thankyou.

I don't know for sure on an AC tractor but when that happens on a Farmall tractor the starter is locked up against the fly wheel.Pulling the starter and putting it back will unlock it. If you remove the
started turn the flywheel a few inches so starter is not going back in same exact position.

Yes, pull the starter, it could be the problem. Sometimes the drive gear will jamb in the flywheel gear.

While it's off try prying on the flywheel gear. Watch very closely, if the gear will not turn at all, either direction, it is probably something in the engine.

If it will turn a couple inches either way, or will turn with the clutch held down, it's in the drive train.

As has been said by others starter drive gear stuck in flywheel ring gear which is commonly caused by a weak battery

Have you checked the oil?? Also make sure that the hand clutch is disengaged so as to narrow things down. Also might be a good idea to pull all the pulls out and make sure it doesn't have water in one cylinder which will hydro lock the engine

Omega welcome to YT! Yes, it sounds like everything you tried so far was to turn the engine in the normal
direction of rotation, I have a pretty good hunch when you try to turn it backwards it will. I wonder if by some odd
chance a valve keeper decided to fail and you now have a stray valve on top of a piston. If it turns backwards
taking the valve cover off would be my next step. Odd that Steve seems to think that if it turns an inch or so each
direction with the clutch down ..which I would say is released.. it is the power train. In my thinking releasing the
clutch disconnects the engine from the drivetrain. At least it would on a Farmall, but then I am not an Allis guy so
I don’t know what lurks in the ...power director.. system if it is equipped with one that could cause this sort of thing unless he is thinking
backwards.

dragging the tires on the road? was that with clutch engaged or disengaged?? if you are dragging tires with the clutch disengaged you have
gear problems. you better check the gear shift i would say as i bet thats what happened without you knowing. its stuck in 2 gears. thats the
way my wd45 was when i bought it. same deal!
