Painting new metal

I am painting new steel. What is the best prep for it? May I wipe it down with something like Brake Kleen and remove all the oils and paint or must I sand/grind/abraid the whole thing?

I just wiped down some fresh sheet steel with odorless mineral spirits and paper towels. I was surprised how many times it took before the paper towels didn't look really dark! And I just painted it. So it will be a while before I know the results.

On my projects I use OSPHORust Converter/Metal Primer l let it set a few minuets and spray off with water. If its something special go to a auto paint store and get what is used for body work when dealing with new metal.

OSPHO will remove the oil on new metal : )

1) if you let it dry and paint over it it does not hold paint well.

2) If you let it dry then scuff up well it holds paint.

3) if you let it dry then apply again then spray off it holds paint well.

Just spraying it on and hosing off cleanse the metal damm good : )
It needs nothing else other the other normal prep work for a good job. I use it for my build projects around the shop that I just want a basic paint job on be it a rattle can are a brush job...

I start with laquer thinner to get the coating off the metal. Then I sand with 650 paper. again with laquer thinner then with a tack cloth until the tack cloth stays clean. Next I prime with a self etching primer or epoxy primer. Then paint. I have not had any paint problems since I started doing this. You can hit it with a power washer and not worry about blowing the paint off.
