Deterring mice

What can I use to deter mice from getting into my 95 2500 Chevy pickup? It’s not used all that often So I want to keep those smelly destructive things out.likewise for my tractor engine compartment.

lots of people say to use irish spring soap bars. could shave them and stick them around and under. in garage or outside?

Blue Block, offer them a meal by placing a few blocks under the hood in places where the blocks won't fall out, they will eat a descent meal and leave permanently.

Dryer fabric softener sheets do it for me in my camper and collector car. Then you can dampen one a little and its great for scrubbing bugs off your car.

Then they make the death crawl into the dash and other unreachable places.
After a month maybe it won't stink so bad.

Sticky traps also catch any other animal that comes near enough to come in contact with the glue. I don't like mice or rats either, but I would never use a sticky trap, and let the animal starve to death. Stan

I use what we call green grain. Put it out away from the vehicle and if the mice, rat squirrels, chipmunks I’m OK with it. Try and place it where the birds don’t get it. Had one get in my cabin air filter in my truck, got a whiff and knew where it was. Use stickies and dryer towels when needed.

I have tried Irish Spring soap. They ate the soap. Tried a big bag of peppermints in a jar with holes in the top. They defecated on the lid. Tried mice repellant from farm store ( looks like a little bag of spices). They were undeterred. We put new drier sheets in the truck. It did nothing. We don’t use poison because we have pets. Mouse traps are the only thing that worked. But it’s gross and very time consuming . It also requires continued monitoring. If you find a cure please let us know. They ate my lawnmower seat , $300. And have destroyed many other items. Cats are about the only thing I have not tried. It isn’t very feasible for us to have cats right now. We’re trying to support the quail population. I despise mice. We have our grain storage close by. I guess they come for that and then stay.

Big believer in cats as well. I keep a collector car, my 8N, 2 garden tractors and 2 4 wheelers in my shop, I have a cat that lives in there for the last 5 years. Zero problems with rodents, we also have about 5 barn cats that keep track of the outside spaces, no mouse problems at all.

Well NAPALM is out.

Working on standby generators. I think I have tried everything you can. Phone company guy gave me some packs of what they used. It worked for awhile then they came back.

I use Tomcat bait in homemade dog proof bait holders made of PVC tube. Tomcat baits have a hole thru the center I run a wire thru and secure inside the PVC so they can't carry it off. No pet problems and no mice.

I use standard old mouse traps. I cram black sunflower seeds in each end of the curl of the bait holder. Works pretty well but nothing is 100% against the critters. I have used poison (ropax bars) nailed to a small chunk of 2x4 but seemed I was just feeding them or if it did kill them they ended up stinking up the place or vehicle but not before damage done.

Cats! Local shelter lets You adopt "Barn Cats" that stay in the shed all of the time. You have to feed & water them. A well fed cat will kill more than a hungry one.

The only thing that really works long term is poison and traps. Keep the population in control that way. Soaps, dryer sheets and other popular ideas don't have much effect in my experience. Find where they get into the shop, seal it up. Eliminate any food sources and keep bait stations supplied with those blue poison blocks. Just be sure they are inaccessible to pets.

Someone in this group of people will have the answer to about any problem.........except this one.i been fighting mice and rats for 40 plus years and I guess it’s either poison, traps, cats or find a way to keep them out.so anyone else have any success with moth balls?

I have used mint oil and cinnamon oil on a cotton pad and it seemed to work. Now I buy boxes of moth balls with the moth balls bagged and put a whole bag in each vehicle. It doesn't smell as bad as dead mice.

I use a "walk the plank" trap. It is just a 5 gallon pail 1/4 full of water with a balance board on the edge and bait on the end. Ck out on Ebay. works good and no need to ck and refill as they end up in the water and it resets. Use a antifreeze mix in the winter.

Unless the critters in your area have a different culinary appetite than the ones we have I always had success using dill.

We plant a whole row of it in the garden every year and whatever does not get used for making pickles goes stem and all behind truck seats, into tractors, boats, camper parts sheds etc.

They hate it.

It works.

Tomcat mouse blocks scattered in shed to poison them works for me. Not Decon! they thrive on that.
