Dynahoe 140 3-53 Detroit diesel quit! HELP!

I recently purchased a dynahoe 140AD with a 3-53 Detroit diesel. Put new brakes on it first then went out to the dirt to start my projects. It was running great and digging great then after about 4 hours of digging it stopped running like it ran out of fuel. My son was operating it at the time so he put more fuel in and swent to bleeding the air out of the system. After 2 days of troubleshooting we found that the top end of the motor wasnt moving when cranking it over. Valve springs push rods etc no movement whatsoever. Not good! Also, the fuel pump drive rod wasnt moving so it definitely couldnt pump fuel. Further inspection found timing chain was ok but on the back of the motor we got our hands in tight spot against the firewall and popped off a few covers of what Im told is the accessory drive. Stuck our fingers in there and found at lease 1 gear with missing teeth. This is where i stop, I need a mechanic to fix this 3-53 but havent been able to find one that has the time. I dont have the capability to pull the engine myself and try to check it out further. Does anyone have any ideas what could have happened??

Also, i have been looking into the idea of replacing the motor with a good used 3-53. However, from what I can tell by internet research, there are 8 different models of this motor with some even having different rotations of clockwise or counter clockwise. Also, the Exhaust, and Air Pump, and starter, etc with all different variations in different locations. I have a RH starter and Exhaust, LH Air Pump, and I believe its a clockwise rotation but ill have to verify that today.
My question is, will any 3-53 work no matter which rotation and which side everything is on? Or do I have to have a clockwise rotation with a RH Starter and exhaust and LH air pump? Could i take and 3-53 and just bolt it up and it works? Will the transmission work no matter which direction the motor rotation is? Will the Hyd. Pump work no matter which direction the motor rotates?
Im not even close to being a mechanic but it would be alot easier and quicker if i just swapper the motor although the problem with this one could be cheap and simple repair(???)

Thanks everyone, I appreciate your input and advice!

WHy not cut the firewall out of the cab where it covers the broken parts, use a plasma torch (with fire precautions)or a reciprocating saw, or a
nibbler. Once accable, the repair could take 20 minutes. Thenput sheet metal tabs on the firewall piece you removed, and screw it back down. An
application of windshield urethane glue as a caulking, and there it is. Jim

Thank you! I didnt think of that. Ill look into that idea and.see if it will work for me. Theres so many things on the tractor and i have no idea how to work on them and i didnt even think about doing that. I have a regular oxy/acetylene torch and a sawzall. Maybe i can cut it out. Great idea!

Also there are 2 different water pumps.either clockwise or
counterclockwise rotation.they don’t take the same length belt

Rotation is simple enough to change . Swap the cam to the other side , turn the oil pump around , blower can mount to either side . The Engines are modular . I can not find most of my manuals since the wife house cleaned and reorganized . iirc the timing gears were design changed Part way through production .

So youre basically saying that any of the 8 configurations of the 3-53 can easily be changed to any of the other configurations? That is cool! That helps alot

If it trashed out the timing gears then she is going to have to come out and the back timing cover / CASE will have to come off as the damage is not just the one gear you can feel , plus all them extra pieces and parts will have to be cleaned out . Been darn near fifty years now since i was in a Detroit . My last Detroit tear down was a 318 in a Mack R 700 when the one side started dumping water . Limped it home and myself a buddy rebuilt the one side after supper and was in bed by 11 so i could bed down at the mine by 3:30 , ran all day came home had supper and rebuilt the other side and in bed by 11 . That was a yearly deal with them , my buddy kept a well stocked parts room and had everything on hand , when he came he came with a rebuilt head kits and gaskets if it was V engine he came with two rebuilt heads . simple engine to work on but they plum scare me and i never start one with the valve covers on and vice grips on the rack and the shut down flapper on the blower . Seen one tomany runaways

You can go ahead and buy any 3-53 . You will have enough parts with your old one. I have a book of just 53 series Detroits. I could take pictures of relevant pages and tx them to you
I live in SE Il. Their is a guy north of Mt Carmel Il who has motors parts and new gaskets. My no. Is 618 599 8041.

Good idea.i think thats what ill do. I found a motor that has a rebuilt tag on it for under $1k.

Im up in North Idaho so Im a ways away from just about everyone except canadians. LOL. Hard to find these machines up here

Ideally, if i could find a non turbo 3-53 motor with clocmwise rotation, RH Blower, LH Exhaust, LH Starter that runs good and is turnkey ready, i could buy that and swap it right in and do the work myself. However, ive been looking and just haven't found any that I could swap right in. If anyone has or knows of one, olease let me know. Id be forever grateful!

Also, ive been looking for HyDynamics Dynahoe 140AD manuals and havent found any at a fair price. Does anyone have Mainly the maintenance a d repair and parts manuals for the Dynahoe 140AD and maybe a user manual as well as the Detroit Diesel 3-53 Parts and repair manuals.
In other words, I need a full set of the ma uals for this machine and motor. Do you know of any for sale?
