S O S transmisson problem

I have Ford 4000 HD backhoe/loader with the S O S transmission. All gears were working OK but not "like new". I got into a situation where I had to move 3/4 of a mile through woods and swamps on an old 2 track. It kind of made sense at the time to tow it in NUETRAL with my other tractor. I started it up and placed the selector in "N" so all my son had to do was steer it. After I got it to where I needed to dig NONE of the gears work, although some sound like they want to. I can move it using the backhoe bucket and arms (pushing/pulling). What did I break? Did I strip the traction control because in my haste I forgot to disconnect it.

There is a disconnect lever (right side I think) that is put in a maintenance position for moving the tractor. If it was not moved to that position, the trans may need major repair. Sorry for the bad news. Jim.

thanks for your quick response. Next question what regular manual transmission do I replace the S O S with? It's a 4 cylinder diesel.

There is a 4 speed and 2 5 speeds one can put in but pretty much is a from the transmission back thing

Can't see how it could have damaged if the engine was running and it was in N while it was being towed.

Is there more to this story?

I believe there are components in the transmission that require hydraulic pressure to disengage. This means that the towing of the tractor while the traction control/transmission maintenance mode is still in the "normal operation" mode, that parts (clutches or bands) get fried. It is because being in neutral is not the same as a gear drive neutral. It doesn't take much towing to cause failure. Reading I have done just says don't do it. If the reason the tractor was being towed was because the SOS was marginal (your description) that was probably its last gasp. Jim

Nothing else that I can remember other than I replaced the filter about a week earlier and I was moving it with the bucket (push/pull) motor running of course. After the transmisson quit I changed the fluid but I followed the directions and removed the screen on the bottom. It looked like it had never been cleaned! There was whitish colored slime coating it and probably plugging the flow. Sitting here thinking about it I realize that when I move the traction control (connect/disconnect) on the side of the trans. there is NO resistance in either direction. Should there be? There never has been since I bought it DEAD IN THE FIELD. JIM

If I gut this transmission out of the casing, what would I replace it with? There isn't a PTO, don't need one (backhoe).

Yes Jim if the traction disconnect is moving you feel the resistance and you can feel it come out of and into place through the handle.
