This afternoon I was mowing with a Poulan garden tractor, 24hp V2 Briggs engine, 54" deck.

Just as I was about done, oil started spewing off the left side of the engine. Seemed to be coming from around the bottom of the oil filter, but it was too danged hot to even check to see if the filter was tight. I'm assuming it was. Thankfully, I caught it before I ran it low on oil.

Last thing I did was power wash all of the fresh oil and existing crud off of it. Tomorrow after it's cooled off, and dried off from power washing, I guess I'll pull the oil filter and see what I can see.

Is there any kind of known problem on these, other than the filter gasket failing or maybe the filter itself? It has about 500 hours on it.

Brother has a toro rider start smoking last week and it turn out it got the oil hot enough to melt the dip stick tube and let oil leak out a bit. He shut it down as soon as it started smoking, so he might have saved it or not. It starts good, but waiting for a new part to come in so I can replace it, and replace the oil and see how it fares.... It also melting the bottom bit of the dip stick as well.

1/8" NPT plug for pressure gauge if none installed, or maybe connection for low oil pressure switch. Filter could have split. I had one split on my standby generator for the house...another one of those OEM filter installations, torqued....well beyond the ¾ turn after contact normally recommended. Or you didn't tighten it adequately and it backed off and started leaking.

My 24 hp briggs twin leaked oil from the crank case halves gasket, near the oil filter. I patched it without removing or splitting the motor.

Now that it is clean, top up the oil, start it up before removing the filter.

That way you can for sure find the leak and not guess that it was the filter.

There was a problem with these. Look where the crankcase halves meet, just under the
left cylinder. The heat from that cylinder would cause the gasket to fail. I've changed 2.
Of course, gotta pull the engine and split the halves. I think the kit they give you for
the gasket also contains new bolts with locktite. Utube.... Briggs crankcase gasket or somesuch.
