3 Point Hitch Diagnosis

Hi guys, I just purchased my first tractor. I got a '54 Ford NAA (Going to share it with my dad whom is now in his 70s. He always wanted a "Red Belly"). Not knowing much about tractors, I bought one with great paint but didnt know enough to thoroughly go through the hydraulics. The man that I purchased the tractor from worked the levers and the hydraulics seamed to work fine, however, when I got home and hooked up to a boom pole, that I also purchased, the three point hitch did not raise. It seems to raise up and down normally with no weight on it. With weight on it, it seems to want to move but does not. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks

Pull the left hand inspection plate off and have a look inside and watch for fluid movement. with it running and the hyd lever in the up position with something on the 3 point. You should see little to no movement of fluid and if you do see fluid moving that is the area that has the problem

I'll do that...I also ment to mention, I helped the 3 point hitch lift the boom and then turned off the tractor. The lift didnt leak down immediately. It took 5-10 minutes to drop. Thanks

You could have a relief valve sticking open or the cylinder it self is leaking or the unloader valve is not moving like it should

That's all french to me...lol. l'll do a little surfing on YouTube to get an idea about those parts and their locations.
It really churns my butter to think the previous owner stiffed me like this. I guess not everyone has my sense of honor and integrity. Thanks for the advice :D

Update: I just checked the fluid level. It is up to the top of the dipstick at the dipstick hole. Would that cause the problem? That's a good 8" above full.

UPDATE #2:
I took off the side plate. There is oil gushing from above what appears to be the piston cylinder. Tried to add a video but it's too large and cant link either.

That means either the cylinder piston rings are bad or the cylinder is cracked or some such thing. You will need to pull the seat off and then the lift cover to see what is going on. Lift cover is not light so best to have help or a way to lift it with something like a chain hoist etc.

No wonder he sold it :(
I saved for 2 years and it's my luck to buy a broken tractor. What kind of money are we talking if its cracked?

That was normal for a worn out vane type pump they came with new. Had that same problem back in 1980 on one. Ended up traiding the NAA on a 1965 Ford 4000 with front loader. Could have had the vane pump replaced with a piston pump but due to rest of tractor being wore out needing a complete engine overhaul why we traded But we were still using the NAA for heavy field work and the 4000 was a 52 Horse power tractor while the NAA was a 30 horse tractor so being it gave us a bigger horse in field working ground why we went that way. Had a 44 2N Ford as well that I still have. I have no idea if new pumps are avaible now but your problem is not in the lift part under the seat but the pump on the right side of the engine.

Can't tell you off the top of my head of cost but if you look in the parts area under Ford and then NAA you should be able get an idea of cost

I couldn't be that simple...
I took of the top lid off and when I removed the piston cylinder it had a peice of the gasket missing. I'm thinking of putting her back together and only replacing that gasket to see if it was indeed the problem.

Yes it can be that simple. DO NOT use any type of gasket sealer on that gasket or you will be taking it apart again
