Cut hay yesterday. Old Ford done good. Sickle mower was much happier after we moved it over on its frame so drive shaft was almost straight. No more knocking noise in the transmission on tractor. Odd ain't it?

Not a bit odd. If everything works like it is supposed to, everything is happy, including the operator and the family! That's my opinion, anyway.

The alignment of a Ujoint is a complex 3 dimensional task.. Your joints are in Phase, but that does not provide assurance of smooth action. Not only must they be aligned as yours are, but the total angle from axial straightness must be the same on both ends, and that includes the offset such that the two ends accelerate and decelerate the speed of the main length equally and simultaneously. (center lines of input yoke, and output yoke need to be coplaner. Yours was not before the adjustment. The mower's rotating mass is probably greater than the shafts and collars in the transmission, so they rattled, not the mower. Jim

Not odd at all just think how it feel for you to have to reach in someplace tight and bend your arm in odd way to do thing same applies to a PTO shaft

Somehow I don't think "DAD" would have explained it to son on the farm as you have.. "Its just gotta be this way or your gonna tear the crap outta things", And "DON"T FORGET IT". But you did a very nice job of explaining it. gobble

When I first bought my yellow truck I thought the rear end was going turned out I had to do a little adjustment on the drive shaft carrier bearing and the noise went away

In the U.K. the 5’6” cutterbar NH belt drive mower was the 445E. I have many happy memories of using ours on the 35 then 135 for it’s smoothness and quietness. Alas all things come to en end and it was replaced with an MF 51 saucer mower and then a PZ CM165 drum mower.

Jim, well the voices in my head didn't explain it quite like that!! Lol my wife read your post 3 times and said " yep he is right"

Thanks, it is not simple. I was working with a service manager that had been at Cadillac for years, He and I discussed U joints and 2 cross CV joints as well as roller trunion joints, and ball type CV. I was educated for about three weeks straight. He reminded me that Cadillac owners had absolutely no tolerance for even tiny vibrations. Thanks for reading. Jim

But you can have a drive shift to straight and cause alot of problems too. When we install test engines we offset the engine an inch higher than the dyno, called a power angle. Wish I could share photos of a drive what broke and took out a million dollar abb motoring dyno. It amazing what 5000 horse at 2200 rpm will destroy.
