Another 6 acres.

Well, stopped and talked to a guy who owns a feild right next to the hay feild I rent. It's a little 6 acre chunk of hay ground but I'm happy to have it! Best part is it's free! I'm up to 11 acres of hay ground now, which I know is very small but it ain't about the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. And personally I put quality before quantity. Have a great day everyone!

Garrett, no matter how many acres of land you have, it’s how well you take of it and how well of a relationship you build with the land owners. If you take pride in your work and your machinery and good people, you will be a better neighbor, friend etc. Glad to read how you are doing. Best of luck to you. Kow Farmer Kurt🐂👩‍🌾

Thanks! Yeah I'm really glad I got to meet this guy and have a nice little chat with him, he was really great talk to and to do business with.

Congrats,

Remember, you get out of hay what you put in, get soil checked and apply appropriate inputs.

Went from 50 bales at 60 pounds the first year to 4.5 bales at 1500 pounds The third year on one little piece just by cutting and interseeding some clover and alfalfa and killing weeds

Did you ever get that baler bought

heres a true story

My freind has a stone masonry buisness,,I worked with him many times over the years

He had a hard time finding help,,its a tough ,hardworking job,,but very interesting,,and satisfying rewarding job .

He just couldnt find anyone willing to try it'

He called me,,said come help me please till I find someone,,that went on for many years. We would each mix cement,,and go at laying stone etc,,all was well.

He has a small farm,,a field in front he used to brush hog occasionally.

One day a young man with an old flatbed stopped in,,asked him if he could take over the field,,to get the hay.He was just out of high school,,had been working at a big dairy farm,,but it went out of business. He had some old equipment,,and decided that summer he would go around town,,scout up every patch he could find.

As this story goes on,,lol,,, my freind said you can have the field,it would help him to keep it clean, but,,,,how would you like a job?

The boy said,,I would,,but I really would like to do the hayfields I Have acquired.
My freind said,,how about this idea.
You work with us,,,when you need an afternoon to cut hay,,you leave early,,we can start early too,if that will help,
So the next day my freind explained the story to me,,the boy was waiting in the truck when my freind got up in the morning.
Right from the start,,the young man was polite,,and a very good worker.
He had run skid steers at the farm,,so he was great at that,,and very good at the cement mixer,,
We all worked together for years,,till I got sick.
Over the years ,,this young man would work, when he was caught up,,he would work at laying stone,,we both taught him as we worked along.
Years later now,,my freind is getting older,,ready to retire.
He is passing his business on to this young man I just spoke of.

The young man is still doing hay,,and working.
He can unload hay all night,,and still be waiting in the truck early in the morning.Once in Awhile he took an afternoon,,but never took advantage of the deal my freind made with him.

When I got sick ,I Sold my white chevy truck to this young man,,he is still driving it,,and it has towed haywagons all summer for two years now,,lol

No, I passed on the baler. I couldn't get hold of the guy to find out anything about it and it sold for $400, which was a little more than I wanted to spend on a baler I knew nothing about

In my opinion, that's a great way to get started. That's exactly what I did. Pick up small pieces that the "big guys" don't want to fool with. It's good for you and the land owner. Best part.... you're starting out debt free! I've picked up ground from the landowners friends too, when they find out someone in the area rents small acreage. Pretty quick 11 acres can turn into 100!
