I purchased the "thing". Lol. Here are

number or mark I could find on it.

Looks like parts missing in the handle area i.e. the empty tab with the hole in it.
The ends of the tong look like they are for the addition of chains via just the link (not a hook or clevis, etc.)
And one end has been altered or fixed to be like the other tong arm.

It is definitely some interesting rust...
intended to be displayed. :)

Would look nice by some greenery.

Looks like it's meant to stretch out a really long spring onto something. Or a ring expander. Maybe a dentists jaw opener for an alligator or a hippo?? Jim might be onto something with the rib spreader idea. Though I would think post mortem. Still think it might be used to stretch A something out to put it into position.

I do know you found a really good whatzit. Good on ya!

Mike

Thank you sir. It will be hanging on a wall here for years to come. I would like to know what it is though.

Can you read the exact patent date? (I can't make it out in your photo.)

I would think if you can exactly decipher that date some searching on the 'net should reveal info on all the patents issued that day, including your "whatsit".

A caliper for sizing watermelons. The widest opening would be a Maxi-Melon. Smallest would be a mini-melon. Maxi-Melons commanded highest prices during the watermelon wars of the 1800s.

You read it here on the internet so it must be true. Actually, no idea but if you get a watermelon in the house try it out, see if you have a maxi-melon.

One thing for sure, it’s an oddball tool, maybe a one of a kind, if this group doesn’t know what it is.
