I was mowing along today with my JD 401B, then I see wires burning above the starter. I shut the motor off, then things calmed down. A bare wire shorted from the switch to the fuel shut off valve. I got the wire fixed, and the battery would not start the motor. The battery was already getting week. Of coarse the tractor was about as far as it could be away from my truck. I took the battery out of my truck , and carried it up hill to the tractor, to jump the tractor. It was almost dead no luck. I had a extra marine battery in my truck. It was so heavy I could have never carried it to my tractor. I went home and got a hand truck, and wheeled the marine battery to the tractor, and I was back in business. I for got to mention it happened in the hottest part of the day. Stan

I carry a three gallon water extinguisher. The fire dept likes that. That same thing happened to the 5020, years back. I had a power extinguisher handy. The chaff soaked in oil for years around the steering column started burning, but got it out. Scared the crap out of me. Stan

Better do good inspection on your equipment for wire insulation.

I did the walk of shame Sunday.

Water base extinguishers do work too good on electric nor fuel fires.
If nothing else, throw dirt on it.

Thats what I did on the interstate when the new alternator bearing seized and the 454 kept on going.
I pulled over, opened hood and alternator was on fire.
Scooped up dirt from shoulder and dumped on it.

The fire dept likes a water extinguisher for dry weeds. I know a water extinguisher is not good for electrical fires. I never expected an electrical fire. I will have to find a place for a power extinguisher now. Stan

I've always thought I should chain a hammer near the batteries on my equipment to quickly knock the post off of the battery.

Nowadays they have the fancy battery disconnect switches. Pretty cheap insurance I guess.

Dirt saved an old Farmall B for me. It had an electrical fire under the gas tank.

Good idea not for the hammer, but for a disconnect. My battery is in a hole I could never get to it. I will put in a work order to have it done. I wish. Stan

(quoted from post at 17:41:31 07/22/20) I need to get extinguishers on mine . Is the water the best

One that is rated ABC is effective on fiber, ffuels, and electrical fires.
They are by far the most made type. They are the type commonly found in schools nd commercial buildings, etc.

SV, for most harvest work a water extinguisher is best simply because the fire load of the amount of class A fuel is far too much for even a large ABC. Your best bet is a small 2.5 BC for in the cab and a 2.5 gal APW on the combine or baler during harvest. I carried a 2.5 gal APW in my truck for many years. It kept a number of small fires from getting a lot bigger including some houses.

I think water is good for a grass fire. I have one it is almost 3 gal. I put a charge of air on it and it discharges all the water. Then if you want to squirt someone just add more water, and air. Stan

Stan, it sounds like you have a standard APW. Add a teaspoon of dish detergent to it and you will double its extinguishing capability.
