If I could do it all over again - lessons from the experts

Hi All,

Been reading and learning much and thought this would be a fun question.

If you could it all over again - what would you do differently?

What would you tell to a youngin just starting out?

What knowledge would you want the next generation of small to midsize farmers to know?

And why?

Different tractors?
Different implements?
Different crops?
Best practices?
Pitfalls to watch out for?
Different career 😂?

What sparked this is; my grandpa was a good farmer - worked the land for over 50 years; headed the local associations and even went before Congress during the farm crisis.

He is gone and I cannot ask him questions, local farmers don't exist much anymore round me and the small, millennial hobby farmers near here are, well, unique.

Any knowledge and advice is appreciated 😀

Dont start with junk unless you enjoy spending more time fixing things than getting stuff done.

Start with junk so you can learn nearly everything that can go wrong even with newer equipment, and how to fix the old with parts that are no longer available, so when the newer stuff quits late on a Saturday afternoon of a holiday weekend with rain due Monday eve...

As for the rest of the knowledge requested, I ain't paid enough for the work I do with the experience I've managed to accumulate often at great personal expense, to say nothing of being a consultant to bring a new farmer up to speed on "everything one needs to know". I'm at least twice your age and couldn't "retire" if I wanted to because it wouldn't pay the bills on 10 acres, to say nothing of 1000.

Besides, there is no teacher quite like experience. I wish you well in your endeavors.
