Farm update.

For those interested, I bought my first
cow/calf pair. A black angus cow with red
angus heifer calf at her side. Very nice
docial cow with good mothering instincts,
About 4 years old. I'm hoping to buy a few
more this winter and I'm looking at buying
a heifer or two from the farm I work for.
I also picked up my first 5 acres of hay
ground last month and got it cut and baled
over the weekend of July 4th. (I got 13
bales off of it). Looking at another 15
acres or so that I'm hoping to rent and
get cut soon. I worked a deal out with the
farm I work for that I got/get to use
their hay equipment and tractor in
exchange for brush mowing with my tractor
and brush cutter for them and doing some
skidsteer work. (with my skidsteer) I
guess it's really all about who you know.
My tractor cant pull their discbine I dont
think and isn't wired for their baler so
that's why I use their tractor. The most
challenging part, has been finding feild
land (I can afford), money, and the fact
that I'm 15, so I cant run to get parts,
diesel fuel, etc. when I need them I have
to wait for my mom or dad which dont get
me wrong I really appreciate all their
help and I'm not complaining those have
just been of my biggest challenges so far.
The calf is Camara shy, lol.

Oh that dreaded red gene shows its face out of a black cow again.
Not a problem as long as you have grade stock.
But a bear with registered stock since red calves can not be registered as black Angus.

Young man you are doing very well at 15.
But enjoy your teen years and quit trying to grow up so fast.
As you get older you may wish to be 15 again but it will be to late.

Great! Now send us a picture of the GF and tell us what kind of car you will be driving her around in.

Thanks, I am enjoying my teen years, I just really love to farm so even tho it might be work I enjoy. I make sure to make time to hangout with friends and stuff too😁
Thanks, have a great day.

You are wise to be cautious about what you spend for hay land rents. Here we pay no rent unless the landowner is paying for inputs, or it is an exceptionally good piece of ground.

Congratulations on that first cow calf combination. Nice looking mama! I like red angus, but blacks are good too. I too loved farming at 15yrs of age. As time went on, I bought the farm from my grandmother, and now I find myself in my 40’s with a family and 50 cows that I calf out every spring. It’s my hobby, as both my wife and I work full time jobs off the farm. Keep making good decisions, and enjoy each day!

Great job and good for you! Enjoy and like the others have said save some time to enjoy your youth a little too!

Where are you at? I'm in northern
wisconsin. We dont pay much rent here but
we do pay 80% of the time, or a really
common way is to just pay by the bale.

I think red calves from reg black Angus parents can be registered in Red Angus A

Sure sounds like you're headed in a good direction, planning ahead a little, not afraid to work, that's all it takes, well you may find the off farm job or career might be the way to further the farming end of it to where you'd like eventually some land and necessary equipment.

That is how a lot of us here got started. Keep us up to date and it will be interesting to see where it takes you. Where in WI? I am south of Green Bay. Bill

You are really doing well getting started farming. You are way ahead of me when I was your age. Is it possible to exchange labor for some calves? That is how I built up a herd. Good luck. BTW I'm near Chippewa Falls. How far are you from me?

Congrats on your pair. Enjoy your youth. Life really accelerates after you are finished with school. As they say “sometimes you have to stop and just look around it will go by you”
