Battery CableQuestion

First off, I hope this isn't too dumb of a question. I have a Cockshutt 40 tractor. It is positive ground. I have a positive cable that is not heavy duty on it currently. I have a 00 negative cable and a new flat strap type negative cable in my part supplies. Can I use the 00 negative cable for the positive side and use the flat strap type cable for the negative without issue?

What [i:654c4848f0]type[/i:654c4848f0] of cable you use is unimportant.

What IS important is that they be of proper size/gauge for the current they carry and that the "hot" side (in your case, the negative cable) be well insulated so that it can't accidentally short against something.

As posted the flat cable will work from the positive battery terminal to your ground point (a starter mounting bolt would be best). The cable from the negative battery terminal needs to be an insulated cable. If you used insulated cable to ground and the negative flat strap cable from the negative post, it would short out every where it touched any metal. My choice would be to use insulated cable on both. Save the flat strap negative cable for a negative ground system like it was intended for.

2/0 cable is the best deal for 6 volts. i make all mine with solder on ends , that way they are the proper length and neat.

Save the flat strap negative cable for a negative ground system like it was intended for." Not true.....ground polarity has nothing to do with that. Ford N tractors (1939-1952) all had positive grounds and flat ground strap.

(quoted from post at 20:04:57 07/18/20) yes, ground is ground.

Gentlemen, I understand the flat strap cable will work on either positive or negative ground. When I said that I was referring to best to use it on a negative to ground system since he had said it was a negative cable, the clamp of which should be for a smaller post size than a positive clamp cable. Poor wording on my part on that.

His original post said he wanted to know about using the negative 00 cable (clamp size aside), which one would assume to be insulated, on the positive, which would be ground on his system. He then wanted to use the (assumed uninsulated) flat strap cable on the negative, which is not the ground side in his case. I can see that leading to a big smoke show, that was what I was trying to convey. Am I misreading what was originally asked? I don't think I've seen a manufacturer use a flat strap cable on the negative post of a positive ground system, but I will say I haven't seen everything.

Fawteen has it right. Though most of you all have the concept also. Just I think Fawteen explained it better. Eug560 cables are not that expensive to just get the right and what you need for it to work .

just to make sure,,, the positive cable can be a flat strap and not insulated as it is ground..(maybe problems with bigger post size)

BUT... the negative cable MUST be insulated or you will see smoke and fire....
