Be careful out there....

Last evening a neighbor was riding his side by side down the hiway and slowed to turn left into his bin site as a semi was to pass. Killed
him instantly. My son had talked to him shortly before...sad deal for his wife and daughter. Hard working farmer with newer equipment and a
nice guy. Had flown spray tractors for his spray business until he sold it a couple years ago....mid-fifties. E SD.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the truck driver seen him but just couldn’t be bothered to touch the brakes seems it getting worse all the time

So sad and so needless. I was bring one of my tractors and tedder home this evening and was getting inyto the left turn lane when a fool decided to pass me in the yellow striped area, glad I was watching him. He had a jacked up dodge and it was blowing black smoke when he passed me, he couldn't wait 5 seconds till I was out of his way. That's how so many farmers get killed, we not only have to watch our equipment but have to watch the other guy.

A lot of farm machinery accidents involve left turns, often a lack or turn signals or not using them contributes to this. As a slow moving vehicle we need to remember people are constantly trying to pass us naturally, so extra caution is definitely needed before turning. Often I will pull to the right and let traffic pass before going left. Just too often people view the moment you start to slow as the ideal time to pass

Even with operating turn signals, other drivers refuse to respect them. Have been passed many times on the left, turn signal on, blocking both lanes of a two lane road before turning. Nothing like seeing a mini van doing 45 mph in the ditch trying to pass.

Almost accident up in Vernal, UT. Truck with gooseneck trailer loaded with tractor had right blinkers on. So six of us on Harleys were going to go around him on the left when he turned left right in front of us. Hit the brakes barely missing t-boning the trailer. Will never trust farm equipment. Guy just waved at us like no foul on his part. He got a single finger salute from all six of us.

Sad to hear of his death. Here in Lakeside, Oregon plus back in my home state of Kentucky, it's illegal to operate a ATV, UTV, side by side, golf cart, etc, on the roads.

Lakeside is having a hearing/meeting over the next couple of months to pass a by-law to allow their use on the roads.

I was pulled over by a deputy and threatened with a $380 fine plus having my 4-wheeler towed and impounded.

Sad to hear it.

Today drove to town and a Gator was driving down the state highway, it passed a couple different turn offs.

In Minnesota you can get a farm or dnr license to drive along township or county roads, but not on state highways.

He kinda wandered along on the shoulder, so far on the shoulder to be in the grass, then sometimes in the full travel lane, then back again. I believe he was moving over for traffic, but he was going 50 more or less, and just weaving a lot on a state highway.

Kinda bothered me, and I’ve taken my Polaris down the country road a time or two I understand, but jeez, that was crowded on a 2 lane state highway. Was a middle aged guy driving, not a ‘kid’, I just worried about him.

SD recognizes 4-wheelers, side-by-sides & those imported r-h drive mini-trucks as motorcycles. They have to be licensed, approporately lighted and have brakes w/brake lights. They are legal anyplace motorcycles are, and at certain times of the year we have lots of motorcycle traffic. All drivers are ticketed if they don't follow the rules of the road, so our ag producers pay a lot of attention to what they are doing on the road.

That means you all were too close to him when he had signaled he was going to turn. Otherwise you wouldn't have had to apply excessive brake.

Sorry to hear that sad deal,, Thank you Steve for the reminder to be Safe,, really does not matter at this point who was at fault, at least one mistake was made which ended up like this very sad, some of the responses here sadly does not surprise me one bit, Sending to his Family and Friends

Had a guy pass me when I was turning left into farm drive. He when down in the ditch to do it. Missed my truck. Ran down a corner post for a tape fence in the horse lot and flipped his van on it side going back through the ditch getting back on the road. I loaned him my cell so he could call his wife to come and get the young child who was riding with him. I was already Partially in the drive. He begged me not call the police, he had to get to work. I helped him right the van, his wife picked up the kid, he promised to return and fix the damaged fence and he left. Never saw him again and he forgot to return my cell. I was just thankful not to be injured. Has anybody ever had someone return and fix the fence?

If you need to travel a highway you take a pickup, not a side by side. I have more sympathy for the driver of the semi who was just out trying to make a living and now is in a mess.

(quoted from post at 18:42:48 07/17/20) Almost accident up in Vernal, UT. Truck with gooseneck trailer loaded with tractor had right blinkers on. Trailer plug probably was wired backwards but actually the six of you were breaking the law, your not supposed to pass while the vehicle on front of you is turning unless they are in a turning lane.
Supposed to wait till they've turned then proceed on.
A farmer was killed here a few years ago, driving his cab tractor and turned left to go into his farm driveway, he turned left right in front of a on coming semi.
Never trust which way something your following is going to turn, slow down and wait for them to turn then proceed on, doesn't matter what their driving if you attempt to pass and they turn into you it's your fault.

That is an important thing, falls into the always be aware of your surroundings sort of thing. I have narrowly escaped a similar fate, turning onto my lane, I saw 1 of 2 approaching tractor trailers from behind while waiting to turn into my lane. 1st one saw at last minute and started laying on the brakes, second one would have crashed into him. Had I not been in the habit of watching in the mirror, and or quick on the draw to get across dangerously close to oncoming traffic, don't think I'd be here today. I look back every time I am making this kind of turn, for that very reason.
