John Deere Fuel Filter

I had a leaking fuel filter and replaced it. All seemed right in placing the new one on, but now it leaks more than the first one did. I had replaced it a couple timed before with no problems, Does anybody replace the spring clip? I considered placing a shim between the spring and the glass.

Sounds as if you're referring to the rectangular filter(AR50041) that IIRC at their introduction were furnished by Roosa-Master. I don't remember ever seeing a shim between retaining clip & filter but it would be worth an attempt. I don't remember experiencing many filter sealing problems.

That filter has been utilized on many brands/models of tractors/equipment since it was introduced in the early 1970's

I agree with you about you probably need replace clip. BUT I find it difficult to believe that thin piece of spring steel costs as much s it does. R66821 CLAMP, SPRING ADD 42.36 USD

I also had a new JD brand fuel filter leak this spring. I found it was leaking from the seam where the glass meets the metal base. I'll be switching to a brand that is all metal.

I will make sure not to misplace mine when changing the filter. T believe that's an o-ring seal, I would inspect the little projections for damage and try a different filter. Maybe lube the o-rings in the filter before installation. I think the early 3020's had the best system. The guy who designed the one on the 4010's, what was he thinking?

I have replaced many of the 3010-4010 ones with the spin on base off of 4020's. I think the 4010 engineer was trying to see how many parts and how many leaks he could cause.LOL Tom

I have replaced the filter base as it was faulty on my deere endloader.

Is the metal one more likely not to leak? One logger near me claims that two out if three leak and my nephew who farmed for 20 years with various John Deeres claims he never had one leak. I am willing to try anything

Deere had a batch or two recently with leaking/fitting issues. Had a bad one last year, dealer told me about it being a problem and got me another which was fine. First I had ever had that happen, have changed 100's of these.

I have a 4440 if you put the glass filters on it they will leak fuel. First time I changed them I couldnt figure it out.Put the metal ones on and that solved the problem.
