just got done taking a steer to the butcher shop,
whats your favorite breed of beef cattle?
i like the looks of herefords, but they take a beating on the open market
angus sells good and are very popular in my area
growing up there was a few shorthorn herds, but no more in my area

their a few charlois herds too, whats popular in your area?
whats your personal favorite?

Black angus is most popular, I prefer Red angus myself. I find I get very comparable prices, and the temperament of the reds is much calmer than the blacks, in my experience.

In my opinion, the best beef that I've had has been the Holstein/Angus cross that we raised in Dad's farm feedlot when I was a kid. We raised white faced cattle and milked a bunch of Holstein cows, ran a Hereford beef herd but used only one bull for the bunch. Always butchered one of the milk cow cross calves because they brought less $ at market time. Flavor got better after the the Angus bull showed up. Fed out 20-25 annually. Dad retired in the mid 80's but used to give brother's family & my family a half beef for Christmas, even after we married & began our non-farm careers. Still miss that home fed beef.

We have alot of angus and simmental around here, a growing number of shorthorn too. Personally I like angus and shorthorn.

My parents and brothers raise(d) registered Shorthorn beef cattle, we ate the steers that were not show material. We still get beef by the half from by brothers. I would agree that animals that appear to be Angus bring the best prices.

You know that color is one thing and what they get to eat is another-- corn fed for Me -- I once had a moose burger up in Canada at a road side stand and it tasted like swamp moss -- bbbaaaa ate half of it with half a bottle of ketchup -- what a gut bomb ---didn't eat again till We got way back into central Minn. real food!!Roy

I really don’t have a favorite. Cross bred beef cattle to me are really good. You get good genetics from 2 breeds. I like both red and black angus, simmental, Charlois, Herefords. I have raised crossbreds and they seemed to be the tastiest and had the best marbling, corn fed though. Kow Farmer Kurt🐂

Here's my opinion. Aside from the size of cuts, if you fed 10 different breeds to the same finish I don't think you can tell the difference at the dinner table. Nothing wrong with dairy breeds but beef breeds are more efficient at making beef. CAB was the best beef marketing plan ever. It got everyone thinking the best beef comes from Angus (red Angus doesn't qualify for CAB). They have high standards, so it IS good beef. That said, I'm a Hereford guy. I like their looks, their attitude, and they're efficient at making beef.

If Herefords were black and Angus were red
Would breeders of Hereford breed Angus instead?
I mean, would the people who bred Herefords first
Be now breeding Angus if things were reversed?

Or would they be loyal to red, white and true
To the color of cowlick be always true blue?
If such were the case they would dis all the blacks
Tell jokes about prolapse, compare them to Yaks

More suited for saddle or wearing a yoke
Than stubbornly breeding until they go broke
And those of the Aberdeen Angus cartel
would they tout maternal endowments as well

Promoting their native resistance to thorns
While cursing as mutants those not sprouting horns
Just draggin' their sheath through cheatgrass and burrs
like leaky ol' bass boats nobody insures

Debate would rage on like it does anyway
if the South had worn Blue and the North had worn gray
Or if Henry Ford had been Hank Chevrolet
You'd still be a Ford man... or would you, today?

So if Herefords were black and Angus were red
would the breeders of Herefords breed Angus instead
The question begs deep philosophical thought
But don't get disgruntled or get overwrought

The breeders of purebreds run true to the grain
and efforts to change them would just be in vain
AND NOT BECAUSE THEY THINK OTHER CATTLE ARE BAD

Actually Angus cattle are a lot different now than when I was young and Polled Herefords were a lot different from Horned Herefords. And Baxter Black ain't no Will Rogers.

Are you aware that there is a registered breed of cattle named "Black Hereford"??? There are many cattle breeds that offer black cattle now that weren't available 50 yrs ago including Charolais.

I'm not implying that black cattle are better just that they are available.

Hereford cattle

To eat prefer Bison

I think they have bred the flavor out of beef 🥩 in favor of grocery shopper presumably that this color is more what beef should look like instead of flavor. Went Ohio state and they were doing just in the Sixties. The redder the better To sell ,all about the sell it . Don’t give a toot about flavor. Shopper today don’t the difference, all about quantity and of course price .
If you want good as your going to get beef flavor eat Jersey mix

Lady that buys hay from me had a grass fed steer butchered last Winter gave me a couple steaks and some hamburger.Best tasting steak I'd had in years tender too.She has them butchered at a USDA slaughterhouse so she can sell the meat retail, kills and sells about 20 a year stays sold out.I think feeding cattle in feedlots is pretty much like raising hogs and chickens in confinement, takes all the flavor out of the meat.

I had a rainbow herd and always ran a Brangus bull. Calves gained well, I never had a calving problem and never had a pink eye issue either

Holsteins that are on the "Kept Fed Program" from birth will out gain about anything. Usually finish as 1 year old's Y-2 at 1200# check it out

The best beef in the world is raised in feed lots. But you won't find it in a grocery store or in a butchers case.

I raised a Brahman heifer in high school FFA. She had a ton of personality. We kept commercial cattle, breeding to hereford, angus, brangus and various cross bred bulls. We did end up with a couple dutch belted/oreo cows. They were easy calvers.
My personal favorite were Shorthorns and if I had my choice that's what I'd get now.
But in my area of Georgia, it's mostly black cattle. That certified Angus beef just drives prices. But what I really find funny about certified Angus beef is a red Angus wouldn't qualify because it isn't predominantly black.

Seasoned properly they are all my favorite 😀. Although I’m a simmental man or simmental cross while they live here
