Blade of a leaf spring, how to weld?

My 1981 Land Rover broke a single blade in on one set parabolic springs. Cannot find any replacement. I need advice now how to weld the blade!

You need to control preheat and post heat to prevent stress cracking. Preheat with a torch slowly til red. Weld repair with a 200 Nickel rod, then cool in an oil bath to bring down to ambient temp.:

The nickel rod is softer metal and is used in welding cast metals and hardened spring steel. There are alternate methods, but this one works very well and is widely used in my area

A more reliable method is to find a pair of used leaves from a wrecking yard that matches (approximately) the length of the broken leaf, and is the same width, and replace it and its mate. I weld a lot, and teach it at SCSU, and controling the heat affected zone as well as the eventual temper of the end result is probably not going to happen easily. Jim

I have welded dozens, with success. Get yourself a some SUPER MISSLEWELD electrode made by Harris Corp. No preheat and no postheat, Weld it and peen the weld immediately to relieve stress.

There is a spring shop here in Memphis that can do amazing things with leaf springs. Maybe there is a similar shop near you. They have a 200 ton press and an oven.

Britcar uk

They have every part piece nut and bolt you could possibly want for anything Land Rover.

Real good prices and they ship worldwide.

I just ordered in a pile of parts for a friends Rover.

With shipping, duty, exchange rate and taxes added in the total came out to about 30% of what the local dealership wanted for the same parts.

They carry factory and aftermarket parts.

I have arc welded leaf springs using stainless steel rods. Don't weld straight across but at a long taper. Also add a diamond shaped piece if there is room like on a top leaf.

The English company is called Britpart, and as Determined says, they have everything for Land Rovers. They will also ship all over the
world. I used their parabolic springs on my own Land Rover, they are good.

welding man, it amazes me what a good welder can repair!

I've never tried welding a leaf spring, would have never imagined that would be possible!

I've also had good luck with using arc welding with stainless rods. Just tapered the broken ends and welded.

If you happen to have two of the same broken leaves cut them across the centre bolt hole and join the two good ends there. Minimum flex that way
