Hi all,
Have amuir hill 101, need 1000rpm for a new mower I am looking at but the old girl only has 540. Anyone know if I can convert the old beast?

thanks, John

I would have thought it would be heavier than a 5000's rear end.
Some 5000's had 540/1000 capability, but most were strictly 540. The ones with 1000 capability had a different 3-point top link bracket - if you know what to look for, you can tell that way. An easier way to explain what to look for, is look next to the base of the pto shaft. If you see two tabs sticking out about 3/8", those are tabs on a snap ring for changing shafts. 540-only models won't have that.

A 101 would be the early 5000 rear axle so it cannot be converted without replacing the
housing and gears with parts from (say) a Ford 6600. Worked on a few back in the day,
good tractor.

Thanks everyone - checked mine and no tabs, so am going to make an "increaser" using a 540 coupler -w- shaft and a sprocket on end of shaft all set into pillow blocks on a chunk of channel with a 21 spline shaft set below it also in pillow blocks and a larger sprocket.

Since it is only for use for a 14" rotary mower cutting weedy (ex hay) fields going to up the speed a bit so that can run mower full speed at half throttle, if it doesn't work worst case I have to change out the sprocket. idea is to run at 1200RPM or so..

Have had the muir-hill for about 30 years or so - was my dads and no mine :) love the old tractor and still use it regularly for real work.
