Loader hydraulics

Tried to use my loader to unload a truck yesterday and the bucket cylinders won't hold position at all. Once i got the forks level to slide in a pallet it would dump all the way down. They are slightly bent. And leak a good bit. Would this cause them to not hold position? New to hydraulics.......

Fluid is full. Main arms stay put. It has gotten worse over the last few days of use.

MOST likely scenario is a bad piston seal on one or both of the hydraulic cylinders.

If the "rods" are bent that could contribute to the piston seal(s) not sealing in their bore(s).

It is leaking "somewhere", either has to be cylinders or control valve, no where else it can. I would not plan to repair bent cylinders, find replacements, looks like it has had some abuse.

Yes, internal leak, piston seals bypassing.

Something to try, engine off, see if you can stop the creep by carefully moving the valve lever ever so slightly in both directions. If you can stop it with the valve, the problem is in the valve. Remember, engine off.

But most likely the cylinders are leaking.

If you have access to a hyd press, you can try to straighten the rods while they are out of the cylinders. Put them across wide parallels, start pressing and turning the rod, just cracking the release valve and turning the rod feeling for the high side, press just a little, keep pressing and turning, they will come back to straight. Time consuming, but saves the cylinders, if the rest is rebuildable.

Internal seals leaking . If been ran in and to much pistons and barrels galled inside and glands out of round from bent rods.

grandpa Love please clarify: is it the bucket cylinder rods that are slightly bent or your forks. I read your post as you put the forks on and the forks are slightly bent. If the cylinder rods are not bent or otherwise damaged $100.00, or less total, should repack both of them, if you do them yourself. Baum Hydraulics looks like about $25. for cylinder kits for the different MF loaders.

Thanks for clarifying that. I had a couple rods for John Deere 430 dozer cylinders made at a machine (not a hydraulic) shop near me, for a good bit less than any new cylinders would have been. The shop got cylinder rod stock, and duplicated the old ones. I had matched the seals up at a local hydraulic supplier during past repairs, so those parts were no problem. Shops vary area to area, but it might be an option for you.

I think I still have the tilt cylinders on a couple of backhoes in the tractor patch. Don't know how close they might be to yours. Prob need repacking but not bent.
