With all the recent shortages, guess what the latest one is?'Pocket' change. Coins. Seems the mint is having trouble keeping up with demand.

many places here only accept credit/debit cards so maybe businesses aren't getting much change in? I thought the government could always make more money.

No shortage here. Don't know why but many people pay at my roadside stand with coins. I probably got $500 worth in a 5 gallon bucket. Just last week I was thinking I got to take them in to the bank.

I have a couple 2 gallon buckets of change, no banks around with a counting machine anymore. One 50 miles away, but they take a good percentage for non customers. Could buy some rolls and roll it myself I guess.

Several bussiness saying cannot get quarters from bank. What is going to happen when cannot get the qyarters fot coin operatered close dryers at laundry?

Around here the bank would remove your coins from the wrappers since they did not do the counting/wrapping. Then they would count it and charge you for the couting if you are not a customer.

I ordered 4 2 pole 30 amp squard D QO breakers at least 6 weeks ago at Tri-State electric and haven't heard from them yet

I’ve been in a couple stores that have signs up asking you to pay in exact change as they are short on coins. Around here (western PA) you can hardly get treated lumber, also our Kubota tractor has been in the shop three weeks waiting on parts. I don’t know if the problems are because of the suppliers or the shippers.

Over the years, I have always saved my change coins. After I accumulate a sufficient amount, I would take them to the bank and cash them in for bills that I would add to me "mad money." Then, if there was something I wanted that was not within the household budget, I used my mad money.

Now, with all of this hysteria over the virus, the banks around here have their doors locked. If you want to enter the lobby, you need to call and make an appointment.

I can't see myself calling the bank to make an appointment to cash in my coins. They will have to wait until things return to some semblance of normal. Meanwhile, I will continue to save my change.

I will never use those self checkouts. If only thing avaible I would leave my cart with ice cream in to melt over everything as I walked out of the store. HATE the things.

Western Ohio trying to get treated lumber to build an outdoor steep and having trouble finding what I need.

And the above is the cause of current coin shortage.
Local bank lobbies closed, no local coin coming in.
Banks are only getting coin from fed reserve which is now only getting coin from the mint. Which is on reduced production so as to limit employee exposure to the virus.

(quoted from post at 11:24:25 07/06/20) They are going to stop making change. Then what are you guys going to do with all your change?

There are some speculators that have been hoarding copper pennies for years. Waiting for the day that the government says pennies are no longer considered legal tender.
And thus can be legally mutilated by anyone and sold for scrap price.

The best post I've seen in days. Sums everything perfectly! Too bad there's no audio to get the full effect of how he said it.

Last time I checked the perimeter of a penny, it was clad copper....considering the current cost of copper ore. I haven't dug into it but wonder when the
goverment will realize that the penny is outdated and currently I'd assume it costs 10x it's value or so to mint and distribute it.

On change I don't use cash in todays turbulent, who knows what to believe, slanted information society. I just swipe the debit card and run my hand
sanitizer over it before I put it in my wallet and leave.

The penny will never be allowed to be retired by the cheapskates who will object loudly any time their $XX.X3 total is rounded up to $XX.X5. Yes, they will make a Federal case over TWO CENTS.

Banks lobbies are still not open for business? I thought we were backward but banks in KS have been open for weeks. Just came back from a big wedding in TX and it looks all open there, too, but I was a casual observer there, not a customer.

We will just do what Canada has done....
"Production of the penny ceased in May 2012,[1] and the Royal Canadian Mint ceased distribution of them as of February 4, 2013.[2] However, like all other discontinued currency in the Canadian monetary system, the coin remains legal tender.[3] Nevertheless, once distribution of the coin ceased, vendors were no longer expected to return pennies as change for cash purchases, and were encouraged to round purchases to the nearest five cents.[4] Non-cash transactions are still denominated to the cent."

Where sales taxes are collected, the law will change from a percentage plus a penny up or down to percentage plus round up or down to nearest nickle.

I guess I am one of those cheapskates. I will not use one of those self checkout deals. Why should I put someone out of a job while paying the same price for things. There is no discount for using them. Also yes I want my 2 pennies. Not having change is just one more step to the cashless society.

That there sums it up!!!

Ha! That got me thinking of the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer throws the bag of coins onto the counter to pay for the calzones he ordered. Anyone watch that show anymore? I'm not a big fan but it did have its moments!

I'm the same way on the coins. A lot of times saving em buys me a tank of gas or a pretty nice lunch.
