2 plow tractor

I have been reading old advertisements and operator manuals. These older documents state that a tractor of 2 plow capacity is needed to operate the implement such as a baler. Exactly what is a two plow tractor? The number of bottoms that a tractor can pull is very dependent on the soil condition. The manufacturers list 2 plow tractor as a specific horsepower. The JD 14T manual calls out the JD 40 or equivalent for power required for PTO operation. Was 40 powerful enough to run a baler? When did they such to required PTO horsepower as determining the size of the tractor need ed to operate the implement?

Depends on the time period. In general a
1930s to 1960s 2 plow tractor would be 25
to 30 HP at the PTO. That being said an
old 30HP Rumely will pull 6 bottoms at
early 1900 speeds and depth.
Plow ratings were for for "normal"
conditions of the times, not 8MPH, not
12" deep nor in black gumbo.

I don't know what a 2-plow tractor is but I can tell you from experience that a Farmall Super C will run a JD 14T. It's a little of "tail wagging the dog" scenario but will get the job done in a pinch.

I think the 14t could be operated with a JD 50. I think the manual that we had for our 14T made that claim. A 40 maybe a little light. The manual that I have for my JD drill discusses how many horses were required.

Those figures were more for comparison purposes than an actual prediction of performance. Your new "2-plow" tractor should perform at about the same capacity as
your neighbor's competitive-brand "2-plow" tractor, whether that turned out to be a 1, 2, or 3-bottom plow according to local conditions. Naturally, that (often
wildly optimistic) figure fell out of favor as horsepower became a more easily and independently measurable thing.

A rough notion of what a tractor might do today is to subtract 1. If you're looking to purchase a "2-plow" tractor from old advertising, you had better shop for a
one bottom plow.

The baler tractor on my grandfather's dairy for the 14T was his 50 since it's had live pto. The bales were dropped on the ground and loaded on the wagon by a team of teenagers. My grandmother drove the wagon tractor. This was back in the mid 60s.

We ran our 14T baler with a 50 back in the day while the 2010 was in the repair shop at the dealer, smoothest operating tractor on that baler we ever had, too bad it was just a loaner tractor that went back to the dealer when the 2010 returned.
