JD 146 Cylinder leak

Anybody familiar with the bucket cylinders on a JD 146 cylinders? This one has leaked some since I bought it a couple of years ago. Leaks as bad parked in the shed as it does in use. Until today. It was almost a stream coming out when I had the bucket in the down position doing some grading. On close examination the oil is not coming from around the rod, but a little further behind it. Is that something that needs tightening? No sign of any place to get a wrench on it. I bought seal kits for both cylinders last year but have not tried installing yet. I don't want to open this thing up until I'm sure what is going on . Picture might show what I'm talking about.

The gland does not tighten by turning. It is held in by snap rings. The seal rings on the outside of the gland are likely leaking by. Go to jdparts.com, search 146 and you can access the parts book to see the snap rings in the cylinder parts drawing. If I remember right one should be visible now, remove it then tap the gland into the cylinder a bit. That should make the snap ring in the groove in the barrel visible to remove. Use the rod and piston to pop the gland out of the barrel. Check/smooth any ridges that may have formed at the snap ring groove in the barrel before reassembling. The gland chucking against the snap ring in the barrel causes that.

Thanks Jim. The online parts book does help. Guess I'll try to open it up the way you describe.

I'm starting to think I should just check the price on a whole new cylinder from John Deere. So far all I have to show is two bleeding holes in my left hand from
trying to remove that big external snap ring on the gland. I'm going to need some assistance on this one. Funny thing was that it did not appear to leak at all
sitting in the shed overnight.
