Lubricating pitman arm connection to sickle bar

In the manual for my 60 year old sickle bar mower it says nothing about any lubrication for the spring loaded connection of pitman arm to knob on sickle bar mower.
Both parts are harden steel and movement up and down is minimal, nevertheless it would seem that connection would generate some heat over time.
Is it always bare metal to bare
Metal?

If it’s lasted this long I wouldn’t worry about it . Remember stuff built back then wasn’t made like the cheap junk of today. Now if it was a new mower and had that same connection you’d better lube 3 or 4 times a day and it’ll still need replacing in 5 years or less

they will wear over time but getting hot was never an issue. when they get warn they do get a little slop in them and get noisy. We used to cut a piece of old shoe leather and put over the head and lock it down. it will make an amazing difference. might have to sub some other materiel now days.

Growing up, i mowed hay almost every day during the summer with a Ford 501 pitman mower. We greased it everyday before starting, but never lubed the ball and latch. Never had a problem with it.

A drop of what ever was in the oil can on that and the slids near that end, and grease the fittings. Dad's instructions. Jim

I have an old pitman arm with a grease fitting on each side of the ball socket. Don't know if it is "stock" or aftermarket. On the other hand when I mowed a LOT as a kid I don't remember doing anything for this joint especially if we had to change a knifebar in the field. It certainly couldn't hurt to put it together with a little grease though or dribble a little oil on it now and then.

My grandfathers trick was leather soaked in oil. Whenever the knife bar was pulled it got grease on the connection and more oil on the leather.
