Adjusting a magneto on a CASE D

hello, I have recently acquired 2 case tractors an LA and a D.
I believe i have a CMA magneto on the D with a lever which come off the magneto and towards the hand clutch. with the tractor running if i turn that lever it adjusts the "throttle" or just makes the tractor sound better rather than spudder. Is there an ideal position for this to be in so my tractor pulls on the tacks better?

I can't EXACTLY answer your question for that specific tractor, but the bottom line is that the lever is to retard spark to TDC or just before so it doesn't break your arm (or the starter, IF so equipped) while cranking.

You need EXACT advice on setting the lever/retarding the spark for cranking before injury or damage strikes, I suggest surfing down the page a few Forums and asking the CASE GURUs on the CASE Forum.
 
Both LA and D should have advance/retard lever next to throttle lever. As indicated below, it is very important to retard the magneto if you hand crank either tractor. There is also a magneto ground, if you completely retard the magneto.

If you do not retard the magneto when hand cranking AND wrap your thumb around crank handle, you are at risk of serious injury if the tractor kicks back. I have seen it happen to people who thought they could crank one by swinging the crank handle right round.

Once the engine is running, adjust the advance to where the engine runs best.
