Horses on 24 ft mower

When he was talking costs he forgot to add the cost of feeding the horses. Interesting rig tho

Conventional wisdom is that the best quality hay by analysis is cut in the evening after photosynthesis has produced sugar all day.

He sure doesn't have much of a brain to overload the horses like that even if it would be practical. Conventianal wisdom says a 6' mower requires 2 horses or cutting 3' per horse. A 7' mower gets 3 horses put on. So figuring the 3' cut per horse and 24' would take 8 head of horses to push that thing. 8 x 3 = 24 foot. And then with 2 head on a 6' mower you stop every half hour to give the horses a 10 minute break before going back to work. Now figuring the power of 3 head on a 7' mower would take 10 head to push that thing. I know the Amish normally do not want a 7' mower because of the 3 horse requirement. And I forget total of horse drawn mowers I have provided the Amish over the years.. And a lot of the mowers were 5' with 2 head so that is 2.5 foot cut per head. Then how would he control it?

And you can drive the tractor into the shed, and forget about it till next time you want it. Just try putting your horses in the barn and forget about them for a month. I am not going to get rid of my tractor and get a team of horses any day soon

It's not a ground driven mower.

Guess I always assumed the reason non Amish people still mow hay with horses is simply because they like to use old equipment and the horses. Which is understandable.
What's the purpose of using horses on an engine powered mower?

Personally I'd take a self-propelled windrower any day but that's just me. I've cut 80 acres of alfalfa in four hours with an SP windrower using less than 30 gallons of fuel (about a third of a gallon per acre). In addition to cutting, conditioning, and windrowing the crop the fuel I was consuming was also being used propel the machine and keep me cool and comfortable. Seems odd that he would be using only 25% less fuel to just cut the crop and nothing else. Plus, I could park at the end of the day and simply walk away and the next morning find the machine right where I left it. To each his own, though.

i was kinda wondering what this 24 ft thing was, took a look and this guy got on my nerves and i zoomed it to the end and thats that. in the early sixties my dad used to cut hay with 2 horses on an ih 5 ft. horse mower. i would take him lunch to the other end of the farm walking.

You can’t buy 4 decent horses worth anything much cheaper than his tractor price he quoted and I bet that mower isn’t cheap either. I’d throw that stupid foot pedal safety switch away after the first round but then again I don’t have the problems with unsupervised children freely roaming around my fields that some seem to . I love horses and I really want to farm with a team but with that contraption may as well jump on a tractor and not have to break 3 times a day or 4 to rest the team

(quoted from post at 19:24:33 06/26/20) I saw no indication there were anything to power the mower.

Leroy, if you watch again you will see and hear. Near the beginning you can see the muffler heat shield, and any time it is in operation you can hear it. He is talking loudly to be heard over the engine sound.
