PTO Not Working On IH 300 U

Rusty Red

New User
New to the forum. I have a 300 U and I cant get the seasonal lever under the belly to engaged to turn on the PTO. Any ideas? Had the tractor over year and would like to get it working. I adjusted the bands but dont think its locked in. The lever under the belly seems like its not meshing in when I try moving it to engage. Dont want to damage the linkage. Thanks

There are three possibilities (assuming the lever moves all the way in the slot). One is that the coupling slider is not moving with the lever. The
secomd is that the drive gear in the front of the transmission (TA housing area) is bad, not driving the shaft. The third is the splines at the
coupling might be stripped. First and 3rd are easiest, remove that little cover where the lever is located, and look at the coupling. If not engaged,
push it engaged and hold it there with two hose clamps on the shaft,Tight. The bad gear is a split. The shaft going into the coupling should be
turning any time the engine is running. If not, the gear is suspect. Jim

I don't think it has much in it, but I would open it with a pan under it, and the willingness to re attach the plate is more than a quart comes out.

Did you try to rotate the pto shaft while trying to move the seasonal lever ? The
control lever may have to be in 'between' on and off so the shaft can rotate. Mark.

I did move the shaft but not at same time pushing on lever. Has been a one man show. Will get wife to turn on shaft as I push on lever. It goes over about half to next hole and feels like it is against something not lining up right. Thanks

It won't turn easily. It will not turn at all if the lever is off, it must be on. Putting the seasonal disconnect in gear might easily be done
with the engine running. Jim

Took cover off under belly with lever and got the coupler to engage. Would only work in one position on the teeth. Maybe wore in that position. That is why I could not get the disconnect lever all the way over to engage. Dropped out about 3 gals. of gear oil. The owner before must have over filled it. Put about a half gallon back in. Oil looked good that came out. Some small metal flakes. No water in it. Cant seem to get the bands right. l back off the drive band and it still runs. The other band will stop it if push on lever but can hear a drag on motor. Any ideas how to adjust the bands and linkage clevis? Thanks for all your guys info.

If the drive band is loose, and it still drives, and if the brake band is working and will stop it, but makes the engine load, it has issues in
the PTO unit. It will need to come off, Sorry about that. My way of adjusting the PTO is as follows, but will apply when it is fixed

Band PTO
Here is my take. Look at the linkage and be certain it has no lost motion, there are pins and woodruff keys in the system that can be loose.
Fix if found.
Place the lever 1/2 the way between the latching points of on (up) and off (down).
Remove the little dome cover on the PTO box. Under this will be two lock nuts and two adjusting screws.
The PTO should turn by hand (engine off).
Loosen the lock nut, and turn the front screw in until you can feel the shaft start to resist turning by hand. Loosen it just until it will
turn free, no more.
Do the same for the rear adjuster so that it can rotate free, but no more.
The front adjustment is the drive adjust, the rear is the brake adjust.
If the screws are down level with the adjustment lock nut top, the bands are worn, and will need replacing, or relining at a clutch shop. That
is not quite the book way, but I have used it many times. Jim
Exploded view.
