Rim Failure Today

While raking hay, this happened. Almost ruined my day and field of hay.

Those 6-bolt wheels are garbage. Find some 8-bolt wheels and hubs. I broke lots of the 6-bolts without a FEL on several tractors, with a loader you are asking for serious trouble!

When we raced dirt track coupes in the sixties we reinforced the wheels by cutting the center from an extra wheel and adding it before bolting it to the hub. Solved the problem.

Call Heywheel. They can sell you a couple different centers for that rim to make it a good wheel again. The new centers are about a 1/4 inch thick. The one that looks like that one will need to be pressed in after cutting the old one out. the other option is a drop in one. It will fit drop in then need to do a slight centering. I'm not selling for them. I did buy one of each centers. I put the press in one in an old wheel that had the bolts look like yours. The drop in one I have for an emergency use deal. The press in one will press in with some pressure from a heavy tractor and a jack. You will need to check for true after you press it in. They also have different off sets for the wheel, so will need to know that when ordering. The website will show you how to do that.I have been happy with the one I pressed in and welded. the cost is about 30.00 for the center and a new wheel is about 60.00. You still have to remove the tire from the wheel either way. They also have reinforcing rings to weld on if you think you need to.

Actually the load rating of the 6 bolt wheels and 8 bolt wheels were only around 400 pounds different, 6 bolt - 3200#, 8 bolt 3600#. Lots and lots of tractors with 6 bolt frt wheels used under loaders.
You have to watch the offset, wider rims increase the offset, overload the small outer wheel bearing.
Not a big deal to upgrade to 8 bolt wheels, but probably not needed. Just because your tire shop says the wheels are "Just like IH" I would check with your dealer, and make him show you the parts book. And keep those lug bolts tight.

Get a rim from a NH chain baler they are built heavy,I have a set on two of my loader tractors no problems with them. And as said keep the lugs tight and make sure the taper on the lugs match the rim. Also was the rim the right size in the center where it fit on the lip of the hub?

A few weeks ago I put a new set of front tires on one of my NF Deeres. I was almost done with the project when it started raining and rained for several days. I tedded about 8 acres with it and noticed the left side had a wobble and figured the rim was bent. Then while baling the wobble turned into a flop. I stopped to look it over and there were only three lug bolts left in the wheel, and they were all loose. I had failed to tighten the lugs on the left wheel. It didn't damage the wheel, and I stole three lug bolts from the other tractors to get the baling done.
