No mowing for a few days

The state of California has issued a red flag warning for the southern part of the state. This means the grass and weeds are at the right humidity and temperature to burn, mostly from a rock strike with a mower blade. Someone using a lawn mower a few years back started a major fire. It does happen. I have started three fires in my 26 years. None got out of control. So I get few days off without pay until things cool off. Stan

Yeah i started a fire at my farm this spring, with cutting of a bolt, and it blew a spark about 8 feet away, started the old dead grass on fire, i couldn't stomp it out, good thing i had a big fire dry extinguisher, with a hose on it !

It got that dry here in 2012, harvest was scary, things around the combine engine would be glowing embers.
Hardly ever gets that dry in my part of Minnesota, always a dew in the morning, humid. Even wen it’s dry it’s still humid.

I was welding some fence support posts once and thought I had the necessary precautions. Got busy welding and got this funny sensation. Flipped up the lid and looked down and I was the pig on the spit.

Never used to believe you could start a fire by striking a rock with your lawn mower. That is till it happened to me. Saw the smoke and put it out right away.
I take the Red Flag warnings very seriously. There have been several close calls in our area with fires during Red Flag conditions and it is nothing to ignore. You would be surprised how many people don't have a clue what "Red Flag" means. Nothing like getting a frantic call from the wife wanting know what she should save as the sirens blared and the boiling cloud of smoke was rolling toward her. The fire was put out, but it scared the wife pretty bad.
