Started out with rain from tropical storm. So we made bread. Then between showers we replaced the sections on the Farmall A sickle mower. Wish we had taller grass to test it on. Then it poured rain again. Ended up with an inch. After it stopped we replaced the sections and guards on the new holland 451.

Farmall A mower

I was using my 1948 Cub with a sickle mower and I assume the mower was originally purchased the same time. Any how, I lost the rear heel plate off my sickle bar. I didn't realize it until I was done mowing and put the cutter bar in travel position. I notice the knife section had falling down because this heel plate is what keeps it up. I happened to think that I have an old horse drawn mowing machine up in the barn. I checked and the part looked the same and measure the same. The horse mower is IH also. It could be about 100 years old. When I was trying to get it off, I figured it might have never been off. It was hard to get off, but when I did and cleaned it up it fit perfect. My niece found my lost piece in the 2 acre piece that I was mowing. She didn't know that I lost it. She came and asked me if I had lost a piece off my tractor or mower. Well surprising enough they both had the same casting number on them . I feel very lucky to have both mowers in working order again.

The last step on that 451 is buy or build a guard bending tool. Then go from out to in with a feeler gauge and set all the sections equal gap on the bottom. about .025.

Gordo SD, will a pipe work? Most of the guards are really close to bottom of the sections, but a couple ain't. I think they all need to be fairly tight to cut good? Hold down clips on top are down and barely stuffing the sections.

Kevin, are all the guards made by the same company? Even if they have the same number the guards will not nessarly be made the same if by different companys. Or they could be defective. And as far as bending them NO WAY. Some say that can be done but in my many a year and with many a different maschine I have not ever found a guard that could be bent. The ones that are not fitting correctly take them off and try other guards. Do this untill you find correct fit. But I would have liked to see somebody do that bending to get them to fit as none I have ever seen could have that done. Yes if you hit something they might bend or just break but to bend for adjustment never. Same for all mowers I have worked on that would now be 135 years old to the haybine. Even when owners manual said do the bending you could not do it.
