GT235 JD lawn tractor.

I dont know if anyone here knows anything about this lawn tractor, but I have a Gt235 John Deere, the problem is the mower deck wont disengage. I was mowing with it when the deck randomly shut off, so I turned it back on and then it shut off agian and wouldn't turn back on. So I parked the lawn tractor and finished the little bit of mowing i had left with a push mower
Now the the engine wont start and the deck is some how engaged. When you turn the pto ON the deck disengages but the tractor still wont start.

Thanks,

There are several interlocks that prevent deck engagement, and starting. They are connected so that it is as safe and frustrating as possible. I am sure there is one under the seat to make sure a body is sitting where they can control the systems. There is likely one on the clutch, and the shifter (likely). I do not know how electrically experienced you are, but with a diagram/manual, it would take about 15 minutes, without and experienced about 20 minutes. It is all in tracing wires, and assessing the switches for appropriate action. some normally closed, and some normally open. (seat) Jim

There is all kinds of safety stuff to keep the pto from starting but I dont think is anything to keep it from shutting off -- so My thinking is the bearings are seized in the electric clutch -- EZ fix and about 150bucks -- good luck--- Roy

There is a forum on garden tractors farther down, you might get some more advice there, although Jim pretty much covered it. Sounds like a frustrating problem!

with all the gadgets on the new mowers it is a wonder they even run still can not beat a little Cub with a woods just not any gadjets

So, you're saying the deck is engaged just sitting with the engine and PTO turned off?

With the battery disconnected, you can hand turn the blades and the engine still turns?

If so, the clutch is welded. It will need a new clutch.

If the clutch did weld, be sure to check the charging system. Running with a discharged battery will let the clutch slip and over heat.

No live power-No power steering--Takes 50 foot to turn around--No diesel motor--3-4 foot cut at the most--16hp.?--I suppose you still have a early 50's car and pick-up also---Tee

I used to mow with an Allis Chalmers B and a Woods belly mower. Was like mowing with a dinosaur. The Cub would be the same way.

IFF the PTO clutch isn't welded solid, it is most likely the PTO switch has failed.
The PTO switch unit includes two sides - a side to turn on the clutch and a side
to activate the seat (operator presence) switch. The wires might have melted or
shorted together, but the switch is the first thing to check. It's the only way
a good PTO unit could be engaged while the ignition switch is turned to "start".

Wiring diagram can be located at WFMachines website.

The older I get, the more important the interlocks are. Yesterday I got a splinter in my little right pinky finger, and today I was gonna get it out, but as I looked at my right index finger, I thought Hmmmmm, that's funny, the splinter's gone. Took me abut a half hour to look again, the there the splinter was, three fingers away. I need all the interlocks I can get.
