My 1959 John Deere 430W has the optional 5 speed tranny. The transmission whines when in motion, especially in 5th gear. What could be the cause. Was wondering what I could do to quiet it down. Would 85/140 weight gear oil work?

Probably needs to be gone through. Some new bearings. If it only whines in 5th then it is probably a bearing as 5th wasn't used that much in them to wear it out.

Tell us more. The most important components of remote analysis include the amount of time you have owned the tractor, the state of the lubrication oil in the trans, the noticeable changes in the operation, and noise level (has it gotten worse?) and changes from operation when cold or warm weather, or from startup to working for 2 hours. All manufacturers of farm equipment had near zero regard for gear noise. Primarily because straight cut spur gears are strong, efficient and much less expensive than helical cut gears used in automobiles. Tell us more. Jim

I have only owned the tractor for about a month. The motor was completely overhauled. The tranny sounded like this when I bought it and the fluids were replaced just before I purchased the tractor with Synthetic Amsoil.

iirc 5th gear is direct drive and should have the least gear whine of any.
Even if there is "nothing wrong" with the transmission. Taking it apart, new bearings, new seals and set the clearances. It will give peace of mind.
How to wonder how rebuilt the engine is? I have had people tell me with a straight face that. New rings, gasket in a tube, new crank bearings and lapping the valves with a suction cup on a stick is an engine rebuild.

Synthetic or not, is it gear oil like 80w90 or trans/hyd fluid. I would think this tractor would have gear oil and might have thinner oil. Just wondering.

You can spend a bunch of money on it and it would probably not change anything. That’s the nature of the 420, 430 tractors. The tranny has straight cut gears that would whine when new. They corrected that with the 1010 series when they went to spiral cut gears.

You can spend time and money to go thru the transmission but how is this tractor going to be used? Parades, wagon work mowing hay? If it were mine I would get the correct oil in the transmission add about 50% Lucas oil and use it. But then it ain't mine
