How Do You Store Tractors and Farm Equipment #2

Here are post fire photos. BIL made 2 trips to Alabama and picked up 2 reasonable JD replacement tractors with insurance money. $25 K cheaper than this area, so well worth the 2 trips. Rest of lost equipment will have to wait. Very generous neighbors loaned him the equipment to put up hay for 128 cattle at no charge.

That would be disappointing day.

Sorry to hear of it.

Southern tractors? Oh boy.....

when a tractor burns like that, do you think the basic engine block and head are still good, same with a car engine. Stan

I thought the same thing. One tractor you see from rear was a Ford 6630 I think. The one with the loader facing front was a newer JD 4800 I think. All plastic body so not much lert. I wanted to buy the Ford , but Glen said if the heat from the fire is hot enough to burn all the oil out of the tractor it literally warps all the metal and gears and renders it junk. Nothing will fit right if the gear shafts or bearing seats are warped and you just waste your money. He bought 2ea 75 HP David Browns years ago which had been in a fire, neither burnt clear to the ground like in the photos for a bargain $1000. He spent more than $700 and 4 months, but could never make 1 working tractor out of the 2. He did get 1 complete tractor built, but the tranny and rear end sounded like pure metal on metal grinding, and oil literally poured from every flanged opening. He said he would give me the carcass ifbI really wanted it, but it would be cheaper to go down and buy a brand new one versus buy parts to rebuild the burnt one.

i beeen there lost 4 tractors and most of my hay eq and lots more in a big fire not much insurence, still paying, i would rather have 2 or 3 small sheds than 1 big one for that reasion and if some equipment sets out some i dont care anymore all of us are in hay or will be soon keep balers clean blow off all the loose hay every time you bale it dont take much for a hot bearing to start a fire be carefull out there

That's the current thinking. He has the new tractors stored in different barns not close to each other. Neither has lightening protection. Still thinking that system attracted the lightening strike. He will be many years trying to recover. The family is helping all they can, but we are not affluent and the cost of basic living is so high now.
