Ford 8N PTO Leak

I put a new PTO seal on my 8n and it still leaks out of the shaft part of the seal. I didn't notice any real wear where the seal rides. Anyone have this problem before? Any advice would be appreciate. I will need to cultivate my potatoes soon and I don't like it leaking on the plants.

Thanks,

Walt

Thanks for the reply.

I am unsure what you mean.

I put a new seal into the housing and new gasket, and tightened it properly.

This tractor has been in the family for generations, so maybe something is missing on the shaft. I believe I have a parts book on it, so will see if it shows that.

Maybe the shaft just worn over the years?

Any additional comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Walt

Thanks Roger, I don't have one of those on the PTO and it probably was left on my Grandfather's farm years ago. I also have the extended pto shaft, so will need to remove that to make it fit.

I am assuming that dripping oil from the shaft is normal operation...wow, would think that it should seal!

Is there a better fix?

I would think that that cover will be full of oil when you remove it to use the PTO.

Welcome additional comments if you have any.

Thanks and best,

Walt

(quoted from post at 10:40:07 06/02/20) I put a new PTO seal on my 8n and it still leaks out of the shaft part of the seal. I didn't notice any real wear where the seal rides.

Either the seal is wrong and/or installed wrong or damaged, or the journal that the seal rides on is worn too much.

There are three different PTO shafts on these old N's:
Early style (39 -- 43), These early style shafts are a pain to re-seal. I typically just replace the whole thing with a new 1-3/8 shaft assembly
Later style (44 -- 52), 1-1/8 size
Later style (44 -- 52), 1-3/8 size

Both the 1-1/8 shaft and the 1-3/8 shaft of the later style take the same seal 9N703, but there are two sizes of the 9N735 collar, that the seal rides on. One for the 1-1/8 shaft and another for the 1-3/8 shaft. I always replace that collar along with a new seal.

Common - Yes,
Normal - No

Yup

By extended pto shaft, do you mean with an over running clutch or later 1 3/8" shaft? If with clutch, yes you have to remove it. If you have the later 1 3/8" shaft, there is a cap for it that is longer. It is shown under 8N pto parts this site.

Yes oil will be present in the cap, but normally is not anywhere near full.

That's great information! I assumed there was only one seal and just ordered it and it leaked almost immediately. Lived with it for a while, but now I will take a close look at all and order the correct parts and seal it right, will get the cap also.

Thanks,

Walt

Thanks Roger, I can remove the extended PTO and order the cap.

I also note several sizes of the seal above and believe I will order the seal, housing and shaft also to be sure that it stops puking oil on my potatoes!

Best,

Walt

I have just been thru that.My new seal was metal,NO coating.Tranny lube leaked between seal and housing.Removed seal and applied coating of gasket goop, reinstalled seal ,NO leak.GP
