Organic potatoes

I see organic potatoes for sale in the store and I notice that they are not sprouting. I store mine at 40F in a cold cellar and they still sprout this time of year. So how are the stores able to keep them from sprouting?

Good question. Mine are not officially organic but they don't get any kind of insecticides or herbicides on them so they must be close to it. And yes, they do sprout in my cool basement storage bin.
 
I have learned a few things about organic that will
make you shake your head. The certifying body
sets the rules on what is acceptable and what is
not. And from what I learned, all rules are subject to
interpretation and availability. In other words, if they
say it’s organic it is, even if it isn’t.
 
There are "organic" sprout inhibitors. Though I agree with Bruce, the organic industry, as a whole, is a joke and racket.

I think ALL potatoes sold in a grocery store for human consumption are treated with that "sprout inhibitor". I tried one time to cut up and plant some potatoes purchased at the grocery store. NONE of them ever sprouted, but the potatoes I planted that I grew a year before DID sprout and grow.
 
You're right, they all are. But I think he was asking how they did it with so-called "organic" potatoes. There are a few different types of sprout inhibitors, some which can be called organic.
However, I did have some limited luck one year sprouting store bought potatoes. They sprouted and grew, but if I recall the production was poor. Never tried it since.
 
The chemical used on potatoes is chlorpropham. You can use supermarket spuds, but they won't do well because
they're sprayed with chemicals to inhibit sprouting. Some people buy organic potatoes, thinking they haven't
been sprayed, but even these won't do as well as certified seed potatoes that have been handled properly and
are physiologically young. So by not buying certified seed potatoes in the spring, you are planting old
potatoes sprayed with sprout inhibitors from the stores.
 
That is what some fellows thought that scammed the organic system awhile back several went to jail and one ended up killing himself.Unfortunately the organic system has conventional grower crooks that try to pass off their products off as organic.
 
I don't look at anything marked organic but other grocery store potatoes do sprout with big sprouts before I get them used. Even have been sprouted when I bought them in the store.
