Started Haying

Got started haying early this year after 4 years of too many heavy rains and then winding up doing first cutting into July! Put up one of the neighbors yesterday and some of my own. Mostly grass knee high and starting to seed. Makes much nicer bales than stemmy 4 foot high stuff. Would have cut more but the 5" of rain we've gotten in May still had areas of spongy wet ground. Rain chance increase the next couple days, hopefully can get more cut after that if not too much. Next week looks fairly wet for long range forecast. I'll take my problems any day as son is in Guards in Minneapolis right now!

I started too on Saturday, cut for about 5hrs. Tedded Sunday and may ted some again today. A little late here, but that's how the weather has been for 4-5 yrs now. A lot of short thin hay due to cold springs, and extended wet spells. Mark.

The weather we seem to have any more is a good case to make haylage bales. A lot of short time opportunities weather wise. Mark.

I dropped 2-1/2 acres yesterday. Very thick grass hay with clover mix. Started cutting at 10:30 and tedded it at 2:30. Was crunchy already yesterday evening. I only cut the one patch because of the limited time after work to bale. Looks like 250 bales or so. If I was off today I might have been able to rake it and get it baled today yet. 40 miles East-Southeast of St. Louis.
