How about this phone number?

When I was a boy our phone, the old hand-crank on-the-wall model, was 1061-J-2. 2 rings, party line, and old Charlie Martinek used to listen in. Aunt Emma yelled at him one time "Charlie get off the line!". He yelled back, "This ain't me, it's my wife!!"

ours was 234 on the crank phone. the town I grew up in didn't have mail delivery and our PO Box was 236. I remember when the number went to 5 digits then got LYric added to the front. that area is now on it;s 2ed area code too.

I knew the old fellow that ran the feed and seed store in town.
He said he remembered the phone number being 11.

Remember in my youth in NE KS in the mid 60’s our number was Edgewood 7- 25xx and we were on a party line we answered a long and a short, the neighbor 2 longs. Later changed to 337-25xx. I am pretty sure everyone on our exchage where in you could direct dial the last 4 digits began with a 2. So in prior years it may have been that the last 3 digits was all you needed to dial.

When I was a kid Dad had a hay elevator and a decal on it said “phone 10” The brand name was “Stone” never saw that brand name anywhere else.

I still remember our party line. #54576 Pa used to pickup the phone and immediately ask-is the line busy. It usually was. Alice L. and Betty L. or Donna V.

In Latonia,Ky.(part of Covington,Ky) there was an S&W tire recapping place that may have been a Sunoco station at one time-before I can remember, anyway. I doubt this is the same place tho. Mark.

We had numbers like that till 1967 and a lot of 8 party lines. When I went to work for the phone company we had some people that were bad to leave their phone off the hook. Several times I went out and left them disconnected for several days. When I went back and reconnected them, they got a little better for a while.

Before I was around we were the last phone on the line, lightening hit the wires and had no where to go, blew the phone off the wall and left a mark that is still in the woodwork here,

Had a 4 party line when I was growing up, but the phones were smart enough to figure out which house of the 4 to ring. At my aunts house 10 miles away they had The different rings for different houses, can’t remember if it was 2 or 4 on their line.

They replaced our phone in the 70s, went to a 2 party line. That went into the 80s.

New phone lines went by, they fed from the other direction, we were no longer the end of the line. Got private lines then. Kept the same phone, but it got set for private line, not party.

Phone is still on the wall, rings loud enough to hear outside.
