Allis 400 Loader Oil and WD Hydraulic Oil?

So in a conundrum... Need to refill the Allis 400 loader's hydraulic sump. Also need to refill the Allis WD's hydraulic sump. The loader calls for 10wt not detergent. The WD calls for 20 wt non-detergent (since it's above 45F).

I could go out and buy jugs of cheap 10wt and 20wt oil... Or, I could just go out and buy jugs and fill them with some universal hydraulic and transmission fluid rated for the J20C standard instead. What do people think, or what have you tried with good success?

The only hyd fluids I use are the UTF and that is in ALL me tractors be they Ford Oliver IH A/C any others for the loader and hyd. A/C I have are a WD45 a C and a D-17

(quoted from post at 14:15:11 05/30/20) Thanks old & Janicholson. Seems like I'm on the right track then. :)

Allis Chalmers Power Fluid 821 or AGCO 821-XL would be the specs in the AC world. Hy Tran, Hy-Gard, Permatran are some others that are similar and usually show on the aftermarket fluid labels for the same fluid.

I concur with the others on the hyd/trans fluid.
I'm very curious about the unit you're working on. Is the loader frame reservoir used? What's that extra tank on the right side of the tractor? Where/what pump is used with the loader? I've never seen a 400 on a WD45.

Thanks jim.me

Bob,

As far as I know, this is a 445 loader... There's a pump installed in front of the crank and the hand crank is removed:

Here's the left hand side (fill spot and dip stick in top left tower):

A loader with a crank shaft driven pump one can use UTF or plan Hyd oil either works just fine. Both my Ford 841S and my 8N with loader and back hoe use crank driven pump and I have used UTF in both for decades

Good deal! Lots of local places have it for a pretty good price. :D

I'm kind of curious about the steering gear. Is that a chain drive speed reducer. Poor man's power
steering?

I'll have to take a closer look next time I am out there. It seems to be that from what people have told me in the past to make it easier to steer with the loader since there is no P/S pump on this.

It ain't the space shuttle, so anything wet and slippery and within the ballpark in viscosity will work just fine. Those simple gear pump open center hydraulic systems are extremely forgiving.

For example, if your hydraulic fluid comes in a bag and is labeled "Play Sand" it's probably not the right kind to use.
