My JD lawn mower story

This past weekend I had the pleasure of replacing the engine to transmission drive belt on our JD 185
mower. It was a 3 hour job. Luckily there was a YouTube video a guy made showing lift the front end
and grind back part of the frame next to the PTO assembly so that doesn’t need to be removed.

All the screws are metric. That drives me crazy as I can’t size
them without test fitting 2-3 sockets almost every time. The entire task would have been close to
impossible for the average homeowner. Now, to fix the big hole in the mowing deck. Wonderful. At least
my supervisor approves.

Funny how we get so used to one system of wrenches ..... but if you asked an alien from Mars which is the simplest system, which one would he pick?

8mm, 9mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, etc.

or

3/8", 7/16", 1/2", 9/16", etc.

The metric system is much simpler yet many of us struggle with it .....

Now mix in a set of Withworth wrenches. For old British cars, and motorcycles. This will really confuse you. Stan

I agree with you but once you learn one the other is tough, no matter which one you learn first. What I hate is when a machine has both metric and English sizes.

I dont have a problem with metric bolt and wrench size. At work all the engine data is now in metric. Thanks to google I can figure out temps and pressure.

SVC ..... "All metric Is just a stupid bungee that means nothing" ...... I'd like to hear what you mean by that, you totally lost me. Hopefully you're not suggesting that the metric system of measurement is confusing and all over the map? Even man's number system itself is metric really, ie. based on tens or multiples thereof.

It would be fine if there were only one metric system used. Which is not the case. And if you really want to be confused look at all the different thread sizes and pitches. More than just fine and course thread in a set of sizes, from 1/4 to however big you want. I ran into this with some bolts and my brother was telling me about all the different pitches and threads per how ever they figure it millimeter or something like that. Just was to complicated for this simple farm boy.

More than one metric system?
Thats a new one I have not heard before.

But like a language, if you do not want to learn a different language or measuring method, you will never learn it.
