Rotary hoeing

Does anyone still rotary hoe? I still do.It's great for plucking out those tiny early weeds.Or do they just spray Roundup and forget it? Breaking crust is also a side benefit. the corn seems to jump after being hoed.what about hoeing multiple times? How tall can the corn be. I've been told by some 'old timers' that they would hoe several times, till the corn got 6" tall.Killed a lot of weeds. After growing hemp last year,we are left with a bumper crop of weeds. Should have planted RR corn instead of the NONGMO that I raise.Multiple hoeing may be in order,as well as extra cultivateing.I may have a mess out there! :( 2,4D/Banvel will get the broad leaf,A product called ResolveQ(it's expencive) will get the grass. What about Attrazine? I haven't used it in 40 years, buy thinking it may be the answer.will Attrazine kill broadleafs?I will go talk to my chemical supplier.Thanks.

rotary hoe and row crop cultivator been in fence row for over 25 years at least. lucky if they bring 500 dollars nowdays on sale no matter the size

I try to disturb the soil as little as possible, so no tillage.

You have a big mess if weeds in non GMO, do what it takes.

I rotary hoe about 800 acres/yr. I need the hoe for the custom organic farming I do for neighbor so I use it on mine as well. I will hoe until corn is about 2" tall. After that start in with the cultivator. If the weeds are up the hoe won't get them. To late. Hoe the crop every 5 days until it is 2". Even if the weeds are up run over it with the hoe because you will get the weeds that would come up tomorrow. I'm lucky. I can practice mechanical weed control on my neighbors to figure out what works on mine. I plant Liberty tolerant crops so I can always save myself if it gets away from me. I am not organic but I try to use as little chemical as possible. Don't know if it is harmful but figure the chemicals are not helping our water pollution. That's just my opinion. You-all can think what you want.

Back in the 70s we always cultivated the corn an each time my dad did it seem like the corn would jump up 2 to 4 inch at night. He would keep doing it even if it got up to waist high. Later in the years my uncle had got a rotary hoe and my dad said one day that we should of had one of them.

I assume you are talking post emerge herbicide applicatio. Accent herbicide will get a lot of grasses out of non GMO corn. There are a couple of others that also are available. They are not effective on all species of grasses. Someone versed in your local weed spectrum could best advise you. Many corn herbicide programs include a pound of atrazine/acre. It seems to spruce up other herbicides, particularly in preemerge situations. The low rate does not usually result in any residual carryover concerns in subsequent crops. Any of your post emerge sprays are going to be most effective on smaller weeds. Don't wait until after cultivating 2 or 3 times before deciding that you need to spray!

I do when the soil crusts to bad,,, very seldom though it is needed,, I have only had to do it three maybe times in 50 years,, works Very well when I have to though,,

I did my beans yesterday. Use an old Dearborn hoe that's been modified from 3pt to pull type. It's old, worn completely out, and held together with baling wire and a prayer but it still gets the job done. Just told the Mrs. yesterday that if I could find a nicer one I'd buy it, but they're hard to come by around here since most people don't cultivate anymore. I use my hoe more for crust busting (especially lately, got 2 inches of rain in 3 hours on Sunday) than weed control, but I do notice a difference when I don't use it. As far as chemicals, I've used Atrazine on my corn with decent results, as well as 2,4-D. I always try to "lay it by" around the first week of July, so it gets cultivated at least twice by that time on top of the chemicals. I'm not aware of anything for a pre-emergent on beans though.
