Hydo Masters - Cub 1862 power steering puzzle for you

I am restoring my dad s model year 1991 Cub Cadet 1862. So far I have solved a few puzzles to get the mower running but have hit a big snag to get it to move.

The unit has power/tilt steering. I can turn the steering wheel in either direction with ease, even when the mower is off, and the wheel turns as many rotations as I want in either direction. But no matter what I do, the tires do not turn when I spin the steering wheel. I can turn the tires by hand, but not with the steering wheel.

I checked the lines at the steering box and all of the lines are hooked up correctly. Hydraulic fluid is full.

When I picked up the tractor a few years ago I had to push it up a ramp into my truck. The tires turned with the steering wheel then. It was tough to turn because the tractor was off but the steering worked. I recall when I unloaded it from the truck the front end of the tractor came down hard. But I pushed it straight back into the garage and didn t turn the wheel at the time.

Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Hello Hammy welcome to YT! I am way out of my league on this, all I can offer is does it have other hydraulic
functions like raise and lower the deck? Does that work? If so at least you know you have hydraulic pressure. I
can only assume you have the proper amount of hydraulic fluid in the reservoir. Maybe try posting this in the YT
Garden Tractor topic section, see link.

(quoted from post at 07:28:26 05/22/20) You may have screwed up the hydro by pushing the mower if you didn't hit the release.

I didn t hit the release and I don t know where it is. Any idea where it is on the 1862?

The release he is referring to is to allow the hydrostatic drive to let the drive wheels turn without damaging the
drive. I think he is confusing you saying...turning the wheels... when you meant to really say steering them. By
the way I have been around a few Deere riding mowers and the release on those comes of the back of the
hydrostatic drive axle. Your hydro if it is so equipped is working?

Used red, you don't have to assume that he has the right amount of hydraulic fluid because he told you that he does.

Thanks, Showcrop! Sorry I seemed to have missed that detail. I dislike it when other people do that, now I have
to accept humility since I have done it as well, 40 lashes for thyself!
