That number made a brief reappearance but although obviously it was a different formulation. I?m pretty sure you won?t find any since the class action lawsuit.

The original 303 went away in 1974 when the use of sperm whale oil was banned, which was an ingredient in it.

Forget 303 oil/fluid, as posted JD (who developed and owned the 303 formula) used sperm whale oil in it which is no longer available. Use an oil/fluid that meets the current JD J20C spec.

Rural king has the yellow labeled 303 $19.00 for 5 gallon.. The green bucket 20c is also there
$34.00 for 5 gallon. For thing like 40 year old dump trucks that just need oil the $19.00 stuff
works. All the loggers and folks that are running old junker stuff with lots of leaks bet on the
yellow bucket. Like other have said it is not the whale oil , just cheap maybe recycled , I don,t
know. I know this when you look in the bucket after it is emptied there is all kind of old black
stuff.

It's no longer allowed to be sold in some states.

303, having no specification, can literally be any mixture of any type of oil that the plant happens to have. As I've previously stated, my research has shown that oil is frequently "line flush," the oil used to flush out the lines between batches of different oils.

Most universal hydraulic transmission fluids meet the J20C standard. It's got to be better than 303.

It?s still the same oil it always was they just took all the label information off because someone wasn?t smart enough to read the do not use in anything newer than 1975

Well one thing for sure if it wasn't junk before using the 303 trash it'll be junk after using it for awhile.Cheap grease and oil are the two most expensive things that can be used long term.

If you are looking for hydraulic/transmission fluid for a John Deere; look at the labels; if they can't put that it meets JD J20c on the label, I say find one that does. Why mess with one that won't advertise the specs it meets? JMHO

whenever 303 sank to the bottom feeder end of reliability i do not know .. except to say that is news to me ..it was always the recommended oil i used in the 4020 and my letter and 30 series CASE tractors . . I did Not know it was a inferior product .. I also do not agree with the statement that the oil are not regulated to SAE standards , I stand corrected by some kind folks and i should note .: my Sara thinks some of you are rude and abrupt. LOL ..,, I dont care I can Be rude and abrupt, Too

??????????????????????

The biggest selling point with the high dollar oem dealer hydraulic oil Is the fact that they can say we test our oil we know what?s properties it meets and how it performs because hydraulic oil unlike engine is not api rated or regulated . I use a lot of 303 on my synchro range tractors my powershift gets the good stuff . My 30/0 leaks Like a sieve on j20c oil which is also an obsolete John Deere spec oil the new spec is j20a. I know quite a few guys that run 303 in everything that takes hydraulic oil aNd don?t have any issues
John Deere hygard .

Run what works for you; no problem with that on my part.

However to give folks looking for the right JD spec numbers; I believe you have it backwards, in your post, as far as which is the current JD spec. J20C and J20D are the current specs for Hy-Gard substitutes to meet. J20C (regular viscosity) replaced J20A and J20D (low viscosity) replaced J20B.

The key point in all of this is detailed in footnote #1.

You could basically put just about anything in a yellow pail and call it 303. There are no standards it must adhere to.
