Differential assembly

A friend of mine came up with this surplus Differential
Does anyone recognize what it's for. I'm guessing maybe an
electric forklift?

Looks like a differential from the last model of the Essex Tri-Directional. The third hub is missing off the far end but other than that, it looks complete and in good shape. To a ETD owner, it would probably be a pretty valuable replacement part.

Those were disc brakes after serial # 12052, so could be early production. IF no tri D takers, it looks prime for a stout garden tractor. Jim

Tri-D used a hydraulic motor for the vertical axis. Maybe that comes from the 2 plugs.. Not sure of serial # when valving was changed

Hook, line and sinker...let?s hope not. Seems narrow for even a forklift. There is probably many small machines that many of us are not aware of. Like the Bendi forklift produced by the Landoll Corporation in my hometown of Marysville Ks. Here is a link, but you will have to do your own search for a video of one in use. And don?t you guys know that a ETD needs a tri-phaser converter that would not mate to the Johnson bolts on that differential.

RED: And here I thought the Johnson bolts had been phased out by that time. Always a learning experience on the YT site.

I can understand others thinking it s the ETD Regular but the spacing for the right hub is wrong. It s off by about a half cm. This tells me it s the Essex with quad-reverseran unusual version that was 2WD forward but 4WD in reverse. It was marketed to buyers who liked to back up a lot. It proved to be an exceedingly unpopular model and surviving examples are rare.
