Bozeman, MT

Southeast out of Bozeman go to Red Lodge, Montana (Montana/Wyoming border) Get on the Beartooth Highway, US Route 212. Listed as one of the prettiest drives in the United States.

Butte Mt. See the Birkley Pit and the World Mining Museum.
Of course, Yellowstone Park. But make sure it's open!!
But remember, some of these places are 100 (more or less) apart).

Sir Scott's Oasis in Manhattan {about 20 miles west of Bozeman) has been known as excellent for decades. Because I am a cheapskate I don't eat there often enough to be a good judge. Lewis and Clark caverns are between Three Forks and Whitehall. Virginia City is known for having most of the original buildings with much of the original stuff in them. It is where Sheriff Plummer (sp?) and several in his gang were hanged by vigilantes. They earned it. Look me up and call me while in the area if you want.

The Beartooth Highway is currently CLOSED for the season.

The road, which closes each winter because of excessive snow and adverse winter conditions, typically opens by the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.
Poke Here

Big Sky Resort is about 40 miles south. Worth a look, but air was too thin for me.
Was Chet Huntley's retirement project. (News reader on TV)

The last time I was out there I made a special stop in Livingston on I90.
They were just beginning to restore the RR Station. A very impressive building.
Station

Yes.....CDMAN has a great suggestion. We pulled off at Livingston Mt. We had lunch at Wheat Montana Bakery and Farms right off the exit. We went into Livingston and spent lots of time at the old train station......really, really neat and informative. Also, the old downtown Livingston has some nice older historic and restored businesses. Livingston is just a real honest old western town.

If I understood the news, the Montana side is open, and the rest is supposed to
be open for Memorial Day. But that can change in an instant!!

Thankyou for all the suggestions.
My girlfriend is thinking about driving home to oregon for summer break.
And Bozeman looks like her choice for a rest stop between university of north Dakota and home

IF the Wheat Montana your talking about is the place I've seen it is at Three Forks not Livingston. Livingston has the Yellowstone truck stop on top of the hill west of town. Wheat is on the north side of the interstate with a truckstop on the south side. Then go over the hill to Whitehall.
A nice scenic drive is across US-12 from south of Missoula over to Lewiston WA. Then you can drop down to Pendleton OR from Walla Walla WA take Or HWY 11 through Milton-Freewater This will put you out to I-90 without having to go down the hill from LaGrande If you get close to Grangeville ID stop at the Deere dealer and see if Ted is still around. He has a fine collection of tractors including some old odd stuff. There was 2 models Yuba tractors some old Caterpillars and lots of wheel tractors in 2 different sheds there. There were also a few Cats setting around the Deere dealer lot he owned. I was there 6-7 years ago. He was in his late 70's or 80's then. I think he told me the Yuba's were a friend of his pieces. Might even be able to check with the dealer ahead of time to see if it is all still there.
