renting out a bull

Make sure he will be the only bull , rival bulls can hurt each other real bad. How many cows will he run with , I'd charge by the cow as a breeding fee, usually determined locally , but dependent on the fee for artificial insemination.

Is your Bull clean regarding Bovine viral diarrhea and Bovine respiratory disease and what ever other STD's might be applicable to cattle? Is the herd it is going to clean as well. That would be my concern, is it worth it? If you don't have those problems or are rigged to vaccinate your cows and think you won't mind that then interesting. Cattle are cattle and bulls are bulls, if you have a good one and are getting along. realistically you can't afford to have other peoples issues be yours.

Has the bull been tested for Trich??
No way I would let a untested bull on my land.

The problem with renting a bull out is you normally charge per cow.
Say $100.
It usually makes it not worth the trouble for a neighbor with 1 or 2 cows.
Most that have enough cows to make it worth it can justify having their own bull.

How does that joke go about renting out the bull? Something about,,I don't know what pa charges for renting out my brother Steve.

Just imagine yourself in place of the bull. And then of course, what are you being rented out for? Picking stones in a field? Not much fun. Doing what you were made to do? The price goes up.

A farmer found out his daughter was pregnant from the neighbor's son who was named Harold . He went over to confront the neighbor about Harold, when he knocked on the door the neighbor's daughter answered the door. The farmer said I here to see your father about Harold getting my daughter pregnant. The young lady said I know he charges $100.00 for the bull and $50.00 for the boar. I don't know what he charges for Harold.

I rent a bull every year for my 12 cows, I do not want a bull around all year long. I am right next to town. I have gotten very good bulls, last year registered Red Angus same this year. Cost me $800, I think that's plenty but I have bought bulls and sold after breeding season, usually 60 to 70 days and lost $700 apiece.

I guarentee the bull will offer his services for free! Reminds me of the old Jerry Clower story about the new bull.

Friend of mine sells bulls and boars. That animal never comes back to his farm. If there is a problem and animal has to be replaced the original one goes to slaughter unless someone else wants to take it. I don't know that he has ever rented one out, even a herd bull that has to be replaced.

lots of different ways to look at it. if the guy feeds your bull and lets you pick him up the day you need him, that's worth alot!

I have a fall calving beef herd and rent two bulls every Nov 1.I pay $1000 and keep them until Feb. or March. Works good for me as at herd check last friday cows were bred for a very close calving window. The owner has a large beef operation and is up to date with all his vaccinations and we are as well. There is another farmer that rents lots of dairy bulls. We would get a clean up bull from him sometimes when we milked. If one got mean or sick he would tell you to send it to the auction and bring you another. If it died you needed to pay for a vet exam and if not your fault no fees. Tom

I've rented bulls before. Black bulls $300 for 3 months and I keep him fed. Pretty good deal to me as long as you get a working bull. Same price on Hereford bulls.
