Earlier you mentioned 'the mountains'. You mean the 'mountains of virginia,or other low eastern mountains? No way we can grow corn in our Colorado mountains, excepting in a couple of lower altitude valleys. Our valley here is 5000 ft,we grow corn (pinto) beans,onions,potatoes?..But, have 10-11000 footers here, less than an hour away.Gunnison, about 2 hours from here is 8000ft. they only grow grass hay. even too cold for alfalfa,oats/small grains. Corn, other stuff is completely out of the question. Some years they only get only 30 days between freezes. I would expect some of those 'small' eastern mountains don't even make it it 5000? Sorry,it just struck me funny that they are growing corn in the mountains.

The highest mountain in SC is 3553 feet.
There are lots of bottoms in between the mountains in our state.
Now just a few more miles to the north and west are NC and GA mountains that are MUCH higher.
But there are still beautiful bottoms in between where corn grows very well.
Our mountains put a scare in SweetFeet when we drove up in them.
I think she about tore the hand holds on our Jeep Grand Cherokee off while holding on.

Here in the midwest some of the flatland is at least that high of an elevation. But I suppose your flatland is near or at sea level so it would seem high.

Richard,

Hey, I left the door handle still attached...might have handprint dents in it now... but still attached. LOL

Thanks for the chuckle. :)

Sweetfeet it's a nice ride up Mount Mitchell and Grandfather Mountain, NC as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway Linn Cove Viaduct around Grandfather Mountain.

John in La,

Yeppers, that's exactly it.

Richard is a very good driver - it's just his roads that scared me. Going down into the valley may be scarier than driving up the mountain. Hee-hee.

Had I been the driver... we'd have gone about 1 mph. LOL

I'll bet it is beautiful there. I found everyplace south and east of Iowa to be fascinating (Iowa, though it was also beautiful, looked mostly like home).

We've been to Colorado many times including Gunnison over Monarch. We've driven from Charlotte to Richard G's area, beautiful country and last summer spent a week driving around New England. What blew me away was the difference in the tree line. In Colorado the trees disappear at about 11,000', we drove up Mount Washington in New Hampshire and trees disappeared at about 4500'. Also the roads in New England at times were steeper and curvier than Colorado, actually I thought New England was more fun to drive than Colorado especially through Smuggler's notch in Vermont, just my opinion.

Iowa is home to me . Four different seasons. We can leave if we don't like those harsh winters, but everyone has to be some where, so we stay for the most part. We like Montrose Colo. real well along with eastern Tenn. Ark., Missouri is some what like home. Would like to go to Griffin, Georgia as it is a town that my ancestor was named after.
